The editor will start to warn you when you are close to the file size limit. However, you shouldn't see that warning too often as the limit has been increased dramatically from HD file size limit.

Have any of the in game tracks reached this limit or gotten very close?

I can give you a slight clue... the track that uses most memory starts with GIGA and ends with TRACK

You can create your own four kilometer long tracks if you want. So you shouldn't worry that much about memory/object limits.

Can you edit a track that's been started in say the lite editor and edit in the pro editor?

In Trials HD, you can swap in the menu, but I haven't seen that option in the menus!

Will you need to save the track, quit out and then reopen the track in the different editor?

In raw object count GIGATRACK doesn't fit in top 5, but yeah in overall it ranks up to top3 in overall complexity.

4k+ objects can easily placed in single track without hitting limits. One of our indoor track contains nearly 4k objects. But its not how much you can add in raw object count, its how you use objects in different situation.

You can load tracks made in the lite editor to the pro editor. If you want to start easy, you can do it, and when you feel ready for the pro stuff, you can continue with your existing track in the pro editor.

So I'm assuming that to get 4k objects in a track, you will need to be smart when placing and changing obejects to "decoration".
When in this state is all collision detection off? ie will the rider just pass through the object if its set to decorative?

Yes, everything passes through it when set to decoration.
