    Evolution of a Technique

    Evolution of a Technique

As far as my own personal experience, this has been the evolution of the relatively recently discovered technique which I'm gonna call The Clockwise Momentum Increaser!, accomplished by either alternating RT and LT or simply holding RT and tapping LT.
    __________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ __________

    1. I first saw replays of Murdoc Loch using the technique to get "un-stuck" from fences, etc. by alternating RT and LT as in this replay on Black Belt. (June 28th, 2010)

    2. I started using the technique myself. I needed it to recover in the same exact place in Black Belt, and I also used it in tracks like Dusty Dawn, as well as many tracks since then. (October 29th, 2010)

    3. Much later I randomly figured out that the same technique could be used to also "increase clockwise momentum" when balanced on the front wheel. The track I figured it out on was actually Infected, but I didn't end up needing to use it for on my 0-fault run. As far as I can remember, the first time I used it in a run which was actually uploaded to YouTube, was my passing run on Insane. (July 4th, 2011) I chatted with Murdoc soon after figuring this out and told him about it.

    4. Many others began using the technique regularly after seeing it in replays from both myself and Murdoc, and eventually the alternative method of holding RT and tapping LT started showing up in replays from several of the Japanese guys around the same time. I'm not positive who discovered it first, but I'm pretty sure it was either TBNSoty, sugatin, or gaman no genkai. I continued to use the original alternating RT and LT method for a long time before I realized that the alternative method of holding RT and tapping LT was actually a bit easier...

    5. Eventually it dawned on me that if the technique could be used in such different situations as being stuck on something or balanced on the front wheel, that it may be useable when airborne as well! I figured this out when trying to get platinum on Tiamat II (Dember 11th, 2011) - it worked great as a relatively easy timesaver on the very first obstacle, and I did end up using it in my 0-fault run. It happens quickly, but watch my controls in the corner closely on that first obstacle. As far as I could tell the timesaver was impossible without using this technique, and it helped me stay more relaxed for the rest of the track because the platinum time is fairly unforgiving. I chatted with Spargokuroth soon after figuring it out and told him about it, but it seems that no one else has really started using it. I'm pretty sure I've used it in a few tracks since Tiamat II, but I can't think of any in particular... I know that I'm using it for a single obstacle I'm trying to pass right now from The Beyond NJ by TBNSoty.

EDIT: Evidently many other players discovered this on their own. I'm not trying to take credit for anyone else's discovery, but the timeline above is still true to my own experience - some things I learned from watching replays, others I figured out on my own.

    Conclusion!

Y'all need to start using this technique!

    - Definite potential for small timesavers all over the place for you speed-runner types.

    - What seems like would be some fairly easy new world records on the Flip Hunter Skill Games for you skill game types.

    - And of course for my fellow ninja types, the technique can be used not only as a time-saver, but also to recover - for example on a front-flip to fender-hook obstacle if you take off front flipping too slowly you can use it to "accelerate your flip". Only works on front flips of course... has the reverse effect on backflips which could never be helpful...

    - Finally, just do it on an enormous jump like in Epic Jumps, or any custom map with a huge jump. I don't think this could ever really be helpful, but the speed you can get your rider front flipping is just hilariously awesome.

Haha, nice read! Have to try the airborne version...

Am I just being stupid or are you saying that you can jump further by tapping the brake in mid air?

    ^^

No, you can't do that. You can front flip faster - i.e. "increase your clockwise momentum" by using this technique. It's not just done by tapping the brake. You have to either alternate tapping the brake and the gas, or just hold the gas and tap the brake.

It can't be used to increase directional momentum - only to increase rotational momentum, and only clockwise rotation at that. However it's still useful in the three very different technique I mentioned above:

Getting un-stuck from a fence or thin wall between your frame and front wheel.

Tipping forward with more "power" if you're balanced on your front wheel, say at the top of a vertical wall.

Front flipping more quickly than otherwise possible.

Ah ok that makes sense to me now. All this time playing Trials and people are still discovering stuff!

    Nice write up Mal!
I have started using this VERY often when I get onto a platform with my front tire and need to get my back tire high enough to be able to lean forward.
I never knew it was possible in air... that just seems too tricky for me to pull off. Nice work!

I figured this out within the first few days of release while playing flip hunter. It's now a normal habit. I wonder if Evolution has it. Also, the version where you hold the gas and tap the brake is more effective. I wouldn't give credit to anyone because it's not like one person figured it out and other people copied. I'm sure a lot of other people just figured it out on their own too.

Thanks a lot Malachyte for sharing this with us! I've put in so much work trying to get a worldrecord on Turbo Flip (2nd flip skill game). I never got further then my 8th place ranking... but guess what:

I have the worldrecord now after using this technique. It took me about 30 minutes to achieve, its a sloppy run that can be improved. My run does show how rotation speed and forward momentum is increased significantly using this technique!

Whiplash effect- fav technique of mine. You see alot of this in Slinky's runs and some in AJ/GSW runs too.
