Secondly it means two players who died at different times before a checkpoint will be tied last when they respawn in the game's eyes. This is LOCAL multiplayer you are talking about. In local multiplayer all players must be always visible in the screen (you are playing on a single console & single TV set). Too tight slopes or tall obstacles would cover up the view and players in the furthest away lines wouldn't see their bike. Local multiplayer is designed for fun party playing with your friends.
If your friend stops for infinite time and does not reach the next checkpoint, you can simple:
A) Grab the controller out of his hand, and ride his bike over the line.
B) Yell like maniac to his ear, and see how long he lasts.
C) Go grab something to eat from the fridge and stare at him until he starves to death.
So many options
When playing online, you can play Trials game mode, and select from any single player tracks. Yes even the extremes are included. Other players will not get into your way as you can ride though them (ghost riders). As a bonus, you can also yell to their ears in this game mode if you have a headset
