Apparently, rumors is that Microsoft plans on making it so that you cannot play used games on thier next console. From what I can gather, once you play a game on that console, it only works on that console. Its not much of a secret that the used game market cuts into the profits of developers and publishers.
I have a few thoughts on this...
1. We wont actually own the game itself. technically you will own the liscense to play it. Who wants to pay 60 bucks for a game you dont own?
2. Yeah, used games do take profits from game developers and publishers, and that sucks. But buying a used car takes a bit of profits from vehicle manufacturers, used clothes from clothing outlets, ect... Thats the way our economy works. You buy it, you own it, you can sell it if you chose. Also on the flip side, Gamestop has provided jobs for thousands of people. If used games go down, they lose a job.
3. I predict that piracy on consoles will skyrocket if this happens. Many hackers would do it just to stick it to greedy microsoft...
4. Redlynx was smart, they avoided all of this. Live arcade is awesome! hope it continues with the next generation of consoles.
Sad news, I have bought a single AAA title in the last 2 years and it was Portal 2, I'll stick with Steam and Indie games and won't buy Micro$oft's next console, just like I am boycotting everything EA since Skate 3.
Honestly i dont think theres a purpose to a new console
All they need to do is keep updating the current console
The ONLY reason they want to make a new console is to make more money
They know a ton of people are going to buy the new console
So they just want to make more money
As if they dont have enough money as it is
I think its pathetic
Bunch of money hungry people who dont care about putting out quality products
holy **** we were rats in society now were ants.
I read about this earlier today. Sure hope this doesn't come to fruition. Besides the loss of jobs at places like Gamestop, Gamefly, etc, I guess it ruins the fun of trading/borrowing games from friends and so forth as well. I think it would actually hurt retail sales also, since many people rent games to try them before they decide to buy the full version. I for one would not buy a game that I don't have some sort of preview or good idea about before hand.

I constantly trade games with friends because either i dont have the money to buy it new or they dont, so one of us plays it and we trade and the other plays.
And i also buy some games used if im not sure whether or not it will be worth it so i can play it for a bit then return it if i dont like it and get my money back, this way i dont have to buy a $60 game and then not like it and trade it back for only $25.
I would definitely not buy a game im not sure of whether or not i would like. I would never buy it new, since buying it used or renting is a much better idea if your not sure. No way in hell am i paying $60 for a game then not liking it and not being able to do anything about it.
Actually, a pretty good reason to make a new console is to update the hardware. An xbox works the exact same way as your computer, with an operating system designed for it. It has a cpu, a gpu, and all that other good stuff.Originally Posted by xPrOFeSsi0NaL
I personally love new games, and rarely buy games used. Its a preference for me, but I would rather not worry about getting a disc with a scratch in it or anything like that. I also like my game collection on my wall to be free of those stupid gamestop stickers that are hard to get off and leave residue. Minor complaints? Maybe... But paying full price for a game is worth it to me.
The used game market is not for me, but to try and take it away goes against the very concept of consumerism and your right to own property.
And like you guys said, a lot of people wanna share games with friends. Or take a game to a friends house to play with them over there. I remember taking Goldeneye and Mario Kart 64 to friends houses and having a blast with 4 player parties. Things like that will be no more...![]()
What happens to your game library when your NextBox goes RRoD? We have more than one Xbox in our house, no way am I paying $120 to be able to play a game I bought on BOTH of my consoles.
It wont happen. It can't. I sure as hell wouldn't get any system that restricts me so fiercely. I bought about 10 games this year. Only TWO were purchased new. And I was only able to got them new cause I traded in the other games.
All digital is another story... One that wont happen for at least another generation.
