I respectfully disagree with this statement. I believe that a [song/book/movie/etc] should not be constrained by any predetermined limitations. The key is that it should be as long as it needs to be without becoming boring or monotonous. I've heard 3-minute songs that are boring as hell, and I've heard 27-minute masterpieces that keep my attention the whole time and continue to change and evolve without becoming boring.

The same is true for other art forms. Boring short stories, fantastic 1000+ page novels. Boring 70-minute movies, amazing 4-hour movies, etc.

Really it's all about not dragging anything out. Some songs are meant to be short, others are meant to be long. You can't take what should be a 3-minute song and turn it into a 12-minute song without it sounding really repetitive and dragged out. Likewise you can't compress what should be a 12-minute song down to a 3-minute song without it sounding overly rushed and chaotic. Once again, same goes for books, movies, etc.

That was fantastic!! So much more refined than the early works. To me, the song went up from being disliked to liked a fair sum. The transition works wonders. Awesome.

Maybe the sophisticated forum members could commit *comment* as well.

I know what you are saying. You sound like you are on the ball, but maybe broaden your view of what a fragment is? Maybe you don't need to, I don't know. "Predetermined" is a poisoned word. I never implied that. I also love long music, ie., trance. (Can't say the same for film, games or books. Oh yah, and I remembered that "long" music is short relative to film and especially games and books).

PS. Listening to your 27 min thing. Liking it.

And thanks again for your kind words! I still need to polish up a lot of transitions in the final segment, and I'm not sure about the 80s sounding "solo synth"... but it's close to being complete I think!

Of course. Each art form has it's own length standards, and they are in place for good reason - I don't think I'd enjoy ANY 2-hour song... but all I was trying to say was that these standards should be used as ROUGH guidelines; not followed to a T.

Entheogenic is amazing. If you like it I highly recommend checking out more of their work.

I hope this doesn't offend you, but I would love to play a fast paced, old-school styled, side scrolling, platformer to this song.

Well, I like to think I try my best to NOT write video game music, but I can't deny the fact that I've always been a hardcore gamer... so I'm sure the countless hours of gaming have influenced my creative side in some way...

I'm all about the side scrollers too - I played tons of them back in the day, and even today the types of games that appeal to me are Trials, Super Meat Boy, MotoHeroz... etc.

Amazing. Ye the first minute sounds like a bad 16-bit video game. That needs some spice. I'd put a very subtle hint of the crystals at the start, then the end will be a logical continuation of the start.
