The Evolution of a Song [Feb. 16th - SONG COMPLETE!]
February 16th, 2012
Alright, after countless hours of fine tuning and messing with tiny details no one will notice but me... I think it's finally done! One thing that I'm sure others will notice is that I did extend the song by 17 seconds. The ending in the first rough draft seemed a bit rushed to me - given the mellow nature of the final "movement" of the song it seemed appropriate that it should set the listener down gently rather than be in a hurry to end... I also decided to stick with the name Crystal Cavern. Enjoy!
Malachyte - Crystal Cavern
I'll leave all the unfinished versions up on YouTube although they will always be unlisted. I think it's kinda interesting to hear how the song evolved over time
Once again, I stayed up all night working on the song (this seems to be the only time I feel creative...), and I finished a rough draft of the whole thing! This means that I still have a lot of mixing/mastering/fine tuning work to do, but the length will probably stay the same. Also I changed the name from "The Crypt" to "Crystal Cavern". The song just evolved into something far too uplifting for "The Crypt" to fit. I may change it to "Crystal Caverns" (plural), or something with the word "Subterranean...", like "Subterranean Flow"... something along those lines. Feedback on potential names (as well as everything else) would be highly appreciated!
I added a slow break-beat outro section ( inspired by Starfire's feedback ), and did some work on the intro to smooth it out a bit. The whole song, but the outro section in particular, needs a lot of work still. The basic structure is there, but the transitions still need to be smoothed out a lot. I'm also not sure about the synth lead towards the end. The melody is alright (played live by yours truly), but the synth itself is a little shrill and 80s sounding... I may change it to something else, or at least do some work on it to make it blend in better.
I pulled another all-nighter and made a good amount of progress! I'm still unsure about the break-beat intro because it kinda clashes with what the song turns into afterwards... but it's possible I just need to polish the transitions some more.
Anyway, I added several more sections to the song with a handful of new synths, rhythm patterns, etc. and did some detail work on what I had from V1. I also changed the name from "Into The Crypt" to simply "The Crypt". Check it out!
Malachyte - The Crypt (Unfinished V2)
Note that I looped the section at the end an extra time. I'm planning on making gradual changes over the last 8 bars to transition into a new "movement" of the song.
I decided to dust off FL Studio and try my hand creating something new for the first time since 2009.
This is what I came up with in about 3-4 hours... keep in mind it's only a rough draft of an intro to a song - none of the transitions have been polished, the mixing is far from complete, and the entire layout of the intro may change over time.
I'm not even sure what genre I was going for... but nonetheless, it's a start!
Malachyte - Into The Crypt (Unfinished V1)
What do you guys think? Should I try to make a complete song out of this or should I just consider it a "warm up" for getting back into music production?
NOTE: The name is probably temporary since I have an older song called "Cryptic Power"... but it's the first thing that popped into my head when I listened to what I have so far.
Also the image has nothing to do with me in any way - I simply did a Google image search for "Crypt Stairs" and found one that looked cool. YouTube won't let you upload audio-only files, so I had to do this to turn it into a "movie".
I would like to ask if you can make me a chilli song which I can listen to while smoking waterpipe with my friends? Would love to have some new relaxing songs for that.
Well... like I said I haven't completed anything in years, but back when I wrote music on a regular basis it would usually take me around 100 hours over the course of a few weeks to finish a song. In about 50 hours I would usually have a "complete" rough draft finished - i.e. the full length song, and then the remaining 50 hours would be all fine tuning, tweaking, polishing transition, mixing, effects, etc. etc.
Keep in mind my songs are typically around 8:00 long.
likin it malachyte, should definitely finish this one. irregular type of ****, has cool progression to it tho. makes me want to jerk around like a robot. favorites parts are the spooky pad in the background, the kick rolls and the drum fills. good job, keep working it
Pretty sweet breakbeat style Heetsauce! I had no idea you were a producer. What do you use?
I love the breakdown in the middle with the reverb claps. Honestly towards the end it sounds like it should build back up to something more intense like the beginning section instead of just end... but other than that I enjoyed it!
