Re: My PC has a virus... (Internet Problems: HELP ME)

Open the Network troubleshooter by right-clicking the network icon in the notification area, and then clicking Troubleshoot problems.

If running the Network troubleshooter didn't solve the problem, then follow the steps described in Network connection problems in Windows.

If the steps in that topic didn't help, then follow these steps:

Make sure that all cables are connected (for example, make sure your modem is connected to a working phone jack or cable connection, either directly or through a router).

Restart your modem, and then restart your router. Remove the power cable from the modem and router. After all lights on the device have gone out, wait at least 10 seconds, and then plug the modem and router back in. Some modems have a battery backup that prevents the lights from going out. For this type of modem, press and quickly release the Reset button. If you don’t see a Reset button, remove the battery instead.

Check your router. Because of the new networking features in Windows Vista and Windows 7, some older network routers are not fully compatible with these versions of Windows and can cause problems. You can test your router to see whether it is fully compatible with Windows 7 by running the Internet Connectivity Evaluation Tool. Or, for a list of routers that are compatible with Windows Vista, go to the Windows Compatibility Center website.

Re: My PC has a virus... (Internet Problems: HELP ME)

The troubleshooter won't help me because Windows believes the connection is solid and problem-free.

The virus made my computer think the internet was completely alright, but the PC won't actually connect.

I know it's nothing with the router or any external problems because the internet worked fine on Dr.Web's Linux, it's how I made this topic in the first place. (Now I'm on my dad's PC)

In my opinion you should reinstall your operating system. If you have one virus, there's no guarantee whatsoever that you haven't got 300 more. Even the best AV software doesn't detect absolutely everything.

By the way, copying system files from a different computer is never a good idea. At least make sure that the OS versions are exactly the same and have the same major updates installed in case you _must_ do it. Even then you should make a backup before doing anything.

Yeah, I just popped in the ASUS disc and deleted all partitions and formatted the whole schebang, and put all my progress and wanted things on a USB and scanned em before I did so.. Im happy with this decision, since my dad had put a whole bunch of useless stuff on there before, and now I get to start anew

..but its still a pain in the ***.. I mean, now Im waiting for Windows Setup to finish formatting the partition. Takes forever...

And yeah, the rundll32.exe file I took was from my sister's computer, which is almost entirely identical.. Same OS, same build, so I was safe there..

I think I got the virus from a RTCW:ET mod, since I joined a server once that required me to download a mod, and then the players were all fake bots, so I assumed it was a little fishy... and shortly thereafter was when my computer was really infected with the virus..

Lesson learned: Don't play RTCW:ET? lol
