Game Capture HD Box by Avermedia

Has anyone heard of this? It looks so simple to use and records in 1080i if I read correctly? I may have to buy this if what I'm reading is official.

Bah, it's component and not HDMI. I wouldn't bother with it as analog signals (such as component) will never be as clear, or true HD, as HDMI.

Go with a Hauppauge, whatever it is.

I think the Hauppauge HD PVR is roughly the same thing and also uses component, though it's got that nice PVR feature which you might find useful. (They've also recently come out with a more game-centric version that's got some other features like better youtube support you might wanna look at). The only HDMI capture devices I know about (at any kind of consumer-level price) are the Intensity Blackmagic line of products. I use the Intensity Shuttle myself, and in theory it can capture up to 1080p at 60fps. But there are some catches:
[list:2mi4sksq][*:2mi4sksq] the current drivers only support 1080p @ 30fps, even though the hardware is powerful enough to handle higher framerates. Maybe at some indefinite point in the future they'll release driver updates to unlock this potential.[/*:m:2mi4sksq]
[*:2mi4sksq]capturing a raw 1080p feed requires a ******ed amount of throughput, something in the neighborhood of 300MB/s write speed to your storage device. Even a kick *** SSD can't perform at those levels; you need a RAID. Also, the raw file sizes are huuuuuge at something like 10GB a minute. Personally I have to capture video pre-compressed (they use MJPEG), which brings it down considerably but makes me sad [/*:m:2mi4sksq]
[*:2mi4sksq]the Shuttle requires usb 3.0, and is very picky about which USB 3.0 chip is in use. Has to be NEC afaik[/*:m:2mi4sksq][/list:u:2mi4sksq]

So basically, if you already have a high-powered modern machine that supports the Intensity devices, you'll only reach 720p @ 60fps, even on these HDMI devices (1080i @ 60fps is mayyybe possible, it's gonna depend on your situation). If you don't have a speedy box, you're looking at a substantial hardware investment in addition to the capture device, and you'll still be limited to 720p/1080i @ 60fps, or 1080p @ 30fps.

Even if you don't have a fast PC, the Hauppage (USB 2.0) and this one you've linked to seem like sensible budget solutions that would get the job done. Also I'd suggest searching for those capture devices on youtube to see if the quality is what you want.

    EDIT:
Oh I should add that I bought my Shuttle for capturing games of Geometry Wars, which creates unique problems for video compression. I realllly wanted to be able to capture a raw feed and compress once, as opposed to capturing a compressed feed and having to compress it again. For 99% of games, the quality of the Hauppauge looks great from what I've seen, it just wasn't enough for my situation :/

Well. I went on a hiatus for some time but did end up buying the Avermedia equipment. It's very easy to use and records great. The bad part is I can't figure out why I have audio lag. I checked the company's forums and there are a lot of unhappy customers for this reason. If a patch is not released to deal with this issue it will be getting sent back! What capture equipment is everyone using these days?

People seem happy with the ElGato Game Capture HD, which uses HDMI.

You just completely contradicted yourself Shifty LOL Hauppauge 1212 HD PVR IS component recorder. IMO there is not a big difference between HDMI and component.

    Dear Jarr3tt88,

I never said 1212, as that is getting a bit old. The Hauppauge Colossus and the Hauppauge HD PVR Gaming Edition DO, in fact, allow for HDMI input.

Also, there is a difference between component (analog) and HDMI (digital).

    Have a nice day.
