here in england its the parents responsibility to ensure their children go to school. if a parent allows their child/children to stay at home, for no good reason you can be prosicuted by law, an get a £1000 fine, and up to 1yr imprisonment!

i really hated school so i left as soon as i could, without doing any exams. so when i left school i realised this was a mistake. without a good schooling history, most people (but not all) end up in crap low paid jobs as i found out, working in mcdonalds, and stacking shelves in the local supermarket, being a slave on a building site!

lucky for me though, my father is a landscape gardener, so i learnt my trade from him.

but, if i could go back in time and change things, yes i would have done a lot more in school.

also, in most schools, everyone takes the piss out of the 'nerds'....but 99% of the time these 'nerds' end up getting getting the 50 k a year jobs, and being really sucessfull! lol.

I can certainly agree with a portion of Star's argument. She didn't say that they don't foster writing talent. As far as my Creative Writing and English teachers went, Star is right.

I was paid just as much, or less, attention as other students. I don't consider myself poor at writing (others may) and I think that in a k-12 school this is, sadly, to be expected. When teachers make less than a McDonalds manager you can't expect them to always be advocates for their students.

In an ideal world, they would be. My science, math and social studies teachers were some great people. They weren't always the best with praise. They could lack personality, but you could tell that they genuinely cared about finding a way to reach their students with the curriculum that they were paid to teach.

I didn't enjoy high school, but some of my biggest heroes are those 3 teachers.

I believe in independent learning. I don't want to sound arrogant or aggressive, but I do think that if you all believe schools are great, you should be either a brilliant novelist, or artist, or film maker, or visionary, or whatever. I had to spill my own blood to become a novelist because everything I did at school was a de-education.

PS. what's with the forum format? Is it invaded by aliens?
