    Re: Shifty's 3DsMax/AE Projects - Evolution Trailer

New photo, same old bike, new scene and lighting. Looking for some Photo Realism. This is at slightly over Default settings, so with higher values in my render settings I will achieve a more realistic result. This single frame render took longer than all of the frames rendered for the Evolution video... 2 hours and 17 minutes on a 3.27Ghz 4core AMD Phenom and (here's the killer) 2 gig of RAM.

Some of the problems in this photo are texture warping, such as the wooden base that the bike is sitting on, and sky texture being blocked by the window while still allowing the actual light to pass through. This is caused by my "Final Gather" setting in mentalray (renderer) being set a bit too low. 6 or 7 is best for this type of render, and I used 4.... Yeah.

As my 3Ds Max trials will be ending in a few days, this is probably my last project that will utilize it for 3D modeling. I may try Blender next, as (from what I understand) it is totally free.

Anyhow, thanks a ton for the kind words guys. It really is appreciated.

    Re: Shifty's 3DsMax/AE Projects - Evolution Trailer

So my 3Ds Max 2010 trial is running out, and I just looked at what they want for the 2012 package... $3,495.00...

We all know that software usually disappears when the new version comes out, so I figure, unless you all want to chip in , that it may be time to try to learn Blender. I learned Max (what little my PC is actually capable of) in about 28 days, but I think that learning a completely different system that achieves basically the same goals will be more complicated because of the procedures I have already learned.

Anyhow, thanks a ton for all the awesome feedback on these projects, it's been an awesome learning experience, and a ton of fun.

$3,495?! If had had anything in my mouth I'da done a spit-take for sure! Once you get past trying to do 3Ds things in that new program you'll be whipping awesome stuff up like a champ

I am actually using the new(er) Fully Functional Trial of 3Ds Max 2011, I was previously using 2010. Hopefully, in a month, I can just install the trials of 2012.

I'm working on a few projects right now. None of them animated though. Actually rendering out a pretty high quality scene right now. Hopefully I'll be able to post it in a few minutes or so.

Awesome video shifty. Redlynx should have this as their offical trailer for Trials Evo!(With some gameplay footage of course)

    Re: Shifty's 3DsMax/AE Projects - Evolution Trailer

Alright, a little bit different this time. I wanted to mess with Depth of Field for blurring
the image so that the whole thing isn't in such sharp focus. The following image
shows 4 of the different views I worked in, and should give a bit more insight into
how the final shot was processed.

I used the MentalRay (included) render engine to render out from 3Ds Max and then
imported the image, and a Zdepth pass into After Effects.

In After Effects I added a Lens Blur and utilized my zdepth pass to add the focal
depth. It wasn't exactly how I liked, so I added a Brightness & Contrast Effect and
brought the brightness down, and the contrast WAY up. This resulted in the blurring
effect seen in the final image.

I then added some lens flares because I like them. They just seem like Optical Sugar
sometimes. If you don't like them, then you should redo all of my work and leave
them out. I really think, like always, that they add to the overall feel.

After my Eye-Candy, I did some Curves color-correction to get a colder feel to the
    overall composition.

    Here's the end result:

I know it's a bit large, but I wanted the detail to be better than a lower resolution
would allow. It's my first go with the Z-Pass lens blur, and I don't think it turned out
    bad at all.

PS: Look closely at the center cap! It says "ShiftySamurai", and that's MY gamertag!

Anyhow, thanks for looking. As always, feedback is appreciated (especially if you see
    something WRONG).

Thanks! I was trying to keep it understated. The real work was the rim, so I tried to draw the eyes there instead of my forum tag.

I'm working on a super high polygon tire + rim. Currently (with 4 complete wheels) I have just over 1 million polygons. That's a poop load.

The render quality is about 4 times as good though. I'll post it tomorrow no matter how it turns out, but I HOPE it's good.
