Doom 2 is totally unlike the modern shooters. Real level design. Lots of enemies. Real shooting mechanics (when played with a mouse). Outstanding community levels. Doom 3 is, well, ordinary.

Wait.... Wasn't Doom 2 a single level shooter where enemies could be above or below but you just moved left and right and the game automatically shot high or low?

How is that a "good shooting mechanic"?

Quake 3 Arena Was the benchmark to which shooters were compared for years.

Lots of enemies meant a lot of fast precision was involved (far from easy). It is one of the best established FPSs for speedrunning, be it fast finishes or max kills. I can link a website if you are interested.

The only PC shooter I got into was Serious Sam. Loved the style of it.... Insane amount of enemies and lots and lots of ammo.
