There's a bunch of tutorials around the net. I had to perform one myself when the Apple Store fixed my phone and put 4.2.10 (Verizon) on it.
Can you link one? I have no idea what that technical jibberish means

I don't want to sound like a jerk here, but I don't know if I want to link to one. It's relatively simple, but if you don't do it exactly right you can end up with some pretty annoying problems.

I've had a Jailbreak go bad and wasn't able to restore my phone without taking a 4 hour (total) adventure to the nearest Apple Store.

It may be best for you to wait for an untethered iOS5 jb to become available. If you really want to continue I will send you a PM with some better resources that can help you.

    iOS5

I've been on ios5 for a few months now (developer account) so the release wasn't that exciting for me . The new features are much nicer though!

My phone is jail token but it is a tethered jailbreak. Most of the cydia tweaks and apps work due to the recent MobileSubstrate update. The devs of the popular apps/tweaks have updated them or are in the process of making them ios5 compatible.

For people no aren't sure whether they should jailbreak/how to jailbreak should either steer clear or at least wait until it is untethered.

I know how to jailbreak but I am still staying clear of this for now.

Running out of battery and having to re-jb each time is a huge turn off for me.

Wait... you had to re-jb everytime your phone died?
What about if you turned your phone off and on again?

With a tethered jailbreak you must re-jb each and every single time your device's battery runs out, or it is reset.

    Pain in the butt.

Untethered JB's don't need this done.

Currently, iOS5 has a tethered only JB. I like my theme too much to switch right now.

Running out of battery isn't really an issue for my as I have access to a lot of plugs throughout the day. If your phone runs out of battery a lot though definitely stay away from tethered JB's! On iOS5 it seems even worse. On earlier software versions you could reboot and everything woud work apart from Cydia, until you booted tethered again. On iOS5, the phone just gets stuck on the Apple logo until you reboot connected to a computer.

Basically, when an untethered JB is available I can't think of any reason not to JB as all it does is open up more possibilities!

I loved my setup too, don't know what I was thinking when I updated.

I would JB tethered but redsn0w (or whatever it's called) is getting unknown problems and not working properly.

Which version of redsn0w are you using? 0.9.9b5 didn't work for me. If you get 0.9.9b4 you have to point it at the IPSW like the old versions but it works fine. Try that. Tethered jailbreaks are fine if you have regular access to a plug and only download tweaks etc. from Cydia when you have the ability to boot tethered.

    iOS5

I think it is mildly hilarious that iOS installs Debian based Linux packages (as in 5icondock.deb), yet talk about how it's been totally built by Apple.

I am waiting for the Siri hack/slash as well. Absolutely NO reason for Apple to disable Siri on the iPhone 4 except to get people to buy another phone. Shady BS if you ask me.

If it's part of the new OS, and I am allowed to upgrade to that OS for FREE (and even get prompted every single time I use iTunes) then cutting things out is just crap. I doubt I'll use it much as I never use the Voice Commands already present in iOS 4.2.8(Verizon), but having Apple say "Oh it won't run correctly on OLDER devices" is false. There are videos of Siri running silky smooth on an iPhone 4 (not S), but Apple has blocked server-side communication from Product ID's that aren't an iPhone 4S ID.

    For shame Apple. For shame.
