Buried - a man wakes up buried in a coffin. very claustrophobic and well directed. Ryan Reynolds plays the part incredibly.

The Hurt Locker - follows a small bomb disposal team in iraq, really suspensful. fantastic film.

127 Hours - the grim real life story of Aron Ralston who got his arm trapped between a wall of rock and a large boulder. played very well by James Franco.

Avatar - a lot of people suggested it only won awards because of its budget/special effects etc. but theyre wrong, its an incredible film. if you havent watched it, you definitely should.

Saving Private Ryan - i hope most people have watched this by now but just in case. WW2 film about a soldier (Matt Damon) who gets a ticket home after his 3 brothers were killed. Tom Hanks, who is amazing, takes a small team to find him.

Law Abiding Citizen - a mans wife and daughter are murdered and the culprit gets only 5 years. he wants revenge, on the murderer and the justice system involved. Gerard Butler and Jamie Foxx, both brilliant.

I Am Legend - one of Will Smiths best and for me that says a lot. last man on Earth survival film.

    @Willyums - Great list.

Avatar = Dances with Wolves. Replace Native Americans with Aliens.

I was not a fan of Buried. Reynolds performance was good, don't get me wrong, but the movie itself, in my opinion, was so-so.

I totally agree with the rest of your list.

Sorry Willys. Avatar was a terrible tribal story, terrible nature story, with utterly undeveloped and mundane characters. Utterly unconvincing religious tripe was thrown in for God Knows Why. Action was a Joke.

Flying dinasours wiping out a gunship??????????
    WTF!!!!

    Glad you saw Ong-bak Shifty

You forgot the weird version of The Sims they played! People get payed to become game characters. With gamers paying to take over their bodies. It looks like they control them with Xbox Kinect!

The movie basically devolved into an action-shooter, but that's not a bad thing.

@Star - Many people liked Avatar. When stating that movies have bad characters, bad plots, and horrible plot devices, you should certainly not list Ong Bak as a recommended movie.

Both movies are good and I have them on Bluray. More people tend to want to watch Avatar over Ong Bak. Even when I try to talk them into it.

Unfortunately, I can't remember the wealth of excellent Asian and European films I've seen. And I listed Ong-bak for its action. The other films I listed have much better characters and plots, I assure you.

i disagree star. no the characters arent too deep but i think sam worthingtons performance is more than convincing. and as far as sci fi goes i dont see the plot as being absurd at all. native species at one with nature, power/money hungry human corporation invades for natural resources and there is a disagreement.

its not meant to be a realistic film. in fact its supposed to be surreal, its set on a different planet and is obviously supposed to feel like another world. i cant see whats wrong with the action either, imo it makes for quite an exciting film. maybe something to do with your bias against US films.

Sure, I don't mind and respect anyone's view. I'm speaking my view.

Here's my summary on how realistic it is: One modern gunship could wipe out a million super-aggressive flying dinosaurs without getting a dent on it.

I've seen tribal films set in Africa (can't remember the damn titles). I've seen films set in the poorest countries in the world. This film uses the premise of simple versus sophisticated, but doesn't even start to compete with those films.
