Music Production Thread? (Play instrument/make music)

    Oh why hello everyone.

I love music. I listen to music more than I do any other activity. I do while I play THD, at school, as I sleep, when I'm studying, and anything else in between. I usually have to recharge my iPod's battery 1-2 times daily.

I myself have played drums since 6th grade, so that puts 6 years under my belt, as well as partial piano. I just love music and everything that it has to do with (So long as the music appeals to me ).

Well I'm fixing on finally being in a band soon, mostly playing some heavy metal and working on blastbeats and whatnot, which I am not to great at atm, and its getting me really excited. I feel Im safe to say I have a bangin drumset with some more cymbals along the way, and maybe another mid-tom. Cant wait to play some stuff with other people, since playing along with bands on studio headphones can get quite old..

While this is going on, I am also getting more and more into making music. Electronically, that is.
I have Ableton Suite 8, and have for a few months. I've been looking into how to use said program, and am confident that I can get some fun out of it, as well as music production as a hobby.
Well, if any of you dont know, Ableton Suite 8 and all that good stuff is incredibly hard to use unless you have a MIDI Keyboard.
Thankfully, I am soon to be getting an Akai MPK-49 professional grade MIDI Keyboard. AND ITS SICK.
Its got 49 keys, 12 pads, 12 knobs, an Oscillator, Arpeggiator, and Note replay. My goal is to be able to make very smooth, melodic, harmonious beats and songs while maintaining a nice, slow, breakbeat mindset. Much similar to Flying Lotus' Los Angeles album, or Teebs and TOKiMONSTA. Most of which belonging to the genres of Experimental, Ambient, Breakbeat, Glitch, Electronica stuff. But no fast tempos.

    Anyways
, Im getting into making music. I have no idea where it will go. I just know I really want to get to doing it, since I keep getting ideas for songs in my mind but nothing to do with them.

So what about you all? Who here is/was a musician and what kind of stuff do you/want to play? I myself am looking to make something similar to this, if anyone is interested.

I'd like to hear from you all, since this forum seems to have an intelligent community for the most part. What do you play?

    My Music.

Yes, it's all electronic, but that doesn't mean I don't play instruments.

I play piano/keyboard, and I use a MIDI keyboard to play all the melodies, etc. in my music rather than just programing them.

I also play drums, and I used to play the violin but I haven't picked it up in several years now...

Im a drummer. Surprisingly learned from Rockband and just kept along with it. I have a set. Small, simple, just something cheap to beat up since i dont have tons of money either.

Been playing for a bit over 2 years now. Just to give you a rundown of the bands and genres quick:

    All American Rejects
    Blink 182
    Paramore
    Pearl Jam
    Rush (favorite band)
    All That Remains
    Gojira
    Dream Theater
    Silversun Pickups
    Taking Back Sunday
    Toadies
    The Sleeping
    Between the Buried and Me

Thats a bunch of bands. Genres include:

    Metal
    Alternative
    Grunge
    Progressive
    Punk
    Emo

Pretty much all that. Thats what i listen to. I would totally take vids of me just free drumming (aka to no music just random jam sessions i do) but my camera sucks and the sound quality would probably be horrible and i dont want to ruin ears

After hearing Twisted Forest, I wanna dance with neon lights and whatnot.

    Good stuff, Malachyte!

And cool beans, Professional. Just keep at the drums. I would try piano, because after you learn that, then any other instrument you learn just needs the coordination aspect of it.

I actually want to learn to play Bass. I been listening to a lot of funky bass lines recently and i think it would be sick to learn.

But we'll see. I tried guitar for a few weeks and sucked, bad haha and didnt really like it. But i was trying to teach myself as well. I would want lessons for Bass.

I know someone who makes dubstep at my school. He's pretty good at it. I asked him what he does to make it and stuff and he uses FL Studio 9 to make it and Mixcraft 5 for the mastering.

I personally am going to be using Ableton Suite 8. The difference being that Ableton uses a little more hands-on and requires more knowledge to use it, but it's better overall. FL Studio is used more for Automation editing whereas Ableton is used for Live Recording.

Basically, if you have a MIDI or any type of equipment, use Ableton.

If you have no equipment, use FL Studio.
