i dont think halo will ever do better than the third one and i dont think any cod will ever surpass cod4, only my opinions.
For starters let me say that as a critic I'm aggressive to games that sell especially well. I've played Halos 1,2,3, no way am I going further, but maybe the others are better (doubt it). I am loath towards the cliched Armageddon story. The political motivations behind the war are nonexistent and at best very shallow. Humans are of course presented as the crusaders for good (pfft as if - in the future mankind will invade every species). Master Chef is one of the most shallow characters ever made.Originally Posted by T4KShadow
The gameplay is highly repetitive. The only dimension the game explores is how to kill others. The environments are bland. The Covenant look like action figures I'd buy for a 5-year-old.
I can go on.
Please do, because the Biblical References in the Halo stories alone are insane.
John 1:18.
The Ark.
7 Halos that destroy civilizations.
There's a plethora of references in the game, there's a Holy Crusade being waged against all of humanity by an Alien Covenant (not in a Bible, I think).
Saying that the Master Chief character is shallow is an opinion I don't agree with but I have read the books, so I could just have more information bouncing in my skull than you.
There certainly is a story in the Halo games and, if you look closely at the huge environments, you will find plenty of Hidden backstory.
I feel that while the graphics are a bit dated they aren't bad, it's just that the bright colors don't really fit the whole "End of the World" vibe of the story.
You spoke of the political motivations of the story being non-existent, but I assure you, they are there in force.
The Covenant Forces worship ancient relics, to them, these are the possessions of their Gods, their Forerunners.
The leaders of the Covenant find out that Humanity is descendent from the Forerunners (this takes place on Harvest), which, if known through the Covenant, would shatter their civilization as it is based on faith that, by understanding the Forerunners, they can follow them on The Great Journey and transcend the physical realm.
Instead of allowing their civilization to crumble into war and chaos around them, the Hierarchs claim that Humanity itself is blasphemy, and every trace of them must be destroyed.
This all takes place while the UNSC is fighting a Civil War, much like the American Civil War.
The UNSC isn't painted as the Glorious Triumphant Heros, but a flawed entity comprised of men and women.
You may not like the story. You may not have paid attention to it, but it is certainly there.
PS: All video games are repetitive. That's how they can map out controls, you always do the same thing over and over again.
Edit - Drat, I didn't respond to the "covenant look like action figures" part. Here goes:
The Covenant are not the real enemy, most of the member species would work with humanity to ensure a mutually beneficial future. They look different, but not like a stereotypical "bad guy".
The Flood (DNA was stored on The Ark to protect it from The Flood) is the enemy, a parasitic species that infests and feeds on it's host. The Flood, to me, seems like a pretty good enemy to fight.
Edit 2 - I do not care for the last few Halo games (ODST and REACH). I didn't like Halo Wars, I am not a fanboy. I do believe that there is a substantial story hidden for you to find in the Halo Universe, and tossing it aside because it sold well might leave you missing out. Give it another chance, explore off of the beaten path.
Damn it shifty, now if only you'd talk about Hydro Thunder Hurricane half as much.
