The argument could be taken a step further, what does "real sport" actually contribute to society? Absolutely nothing.
We live in an extremely competitive world, so if people are spending alot of time trying to get good on a video game, having an ego about it is almost is a natural phenomenon.
Kids will have an ego about how fast they can eat their food, ******ed adults will have an ego how fast they can drink a beer, or how much they can drink without getting drunk. Other ******ed people have an ego because they have a child at 17, a "cool fashion accessory".
People have an ego about almost anything, at least video game ego is harmless..
