The Ultimate List of Trials HD Tips

The Ultimate List of Trials HD Tips

I am starting a large list of tips for improving your riding skills on Trials HD. I have retired from competitive play on Trials so I thought I'd share these with you.

If you have any tips you would like to share then feel free to do so. If I think it's a good tip then it will be added to the main list.

Be aware that some of the tips listed may contradict other tips. This is done on purpose since different players play differently.

I will constantly be adding new tips to this list on a regular basis so be sure to check back every now and then for new tips.
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    - While playing a track always have thoughts racing through your mind such as "I am the best, I am the Trials HD god."

    - Always make a seemingly impossible goal rather than an easily accessible goal. For example let's say you wanted to achieve a top 100 on a track. Make your goal to get #1. If you expect a dog to bite you, you'll be glad if all it does is poop on your shoes. If you are shooting for #1 instead of top 100 then you will put in maximum effort to be the BEST at that track making it much easier to get your real goal of top 100.

    - Focus HARD on every run because once the run is done you can sit back and relax.

    - Don't rely on muscle memory to get through a track or else you'll be keeping bad habits.

    - Never restart if your time hits the negative. It's very probable that you'll easily end up positive later on in the track. It's also very probable that the only reason your time was negative was because you destroyed that section of the track.

    - Always restart if your very first 5 seconds of a track is not as perfect as it could be. The beginning of a track is the easiest part. This is because you have played this part of the track the most out of any other section of the track. Because of this you want to make sure to do this part as best as you possibly can.

    - Use the triggers for default driving and not A and X. You don't want to cap your skill potential at full throttle or no throttle.

    - Play your most rejected track first. I don't do this but it seems like a good idea to start off your Trials session by playing the track that you have played the least. Just pop in 3 to 4 runs or so on it.

    - PLAY NINJA TRACKS. 0 FAULT NINJA TRACKS. This won't apply to everyone but remember the first time you played King of the Hill? You probably faulted quite a bit. Remember when you 0 faulted Inferno II? After conquering a much more difficult and skillful track; all of the previous tracks are cake and are easily "speed-runnable". Set a goal to 0 fault Bounce, AM-2, and AM-3. Play each track at least once a week or whenever you have time to play Trials. When it's all said and done you'll be flying through extremes with ease and be flying through hard tracks with even more ease.

    - Remember that every player has their own unique peak of skill but since Trials HD is such a complex game no player will ever reach their peak. This means you will always be able to get better and better even if you were born with crappy reflexes and fat fingers.

    - Spend lots of time in the editor. This is extremely important if you want your trials skills to near their peak. Almost every object has a special texture. Knowing how to efficiently ride across these textures at maximum speed is very important because every millisecond counts.

    - Have bike colors that you really like. Confidence is important.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here's some other tips that aren't tied directly to Trials HD:

    - TRY not to get angry/frustrated, it's just a game.

    - If you find yourself on a track for longer than 30 minutes then it's time to take a break. Play a different track or even a different game for a little while and then come back to it. This will effectively prevent frustration.

    - Make sure your hands aren't cold when you play. This is going to restrict your movement significantly. Warm up first!

    - Play while talking to other players in a party chat. I said you should focus hard in a previous tip but some people such as myself play much better when they aren't paying full attention to the game. Give it a shot.

    - Play a variety of other games besides Trials HD. As strange as this may sound I find that if I play several other games that aren't Trials for a couple months; when I come back I look at the game at a different way mentally. This won't work for some people but it certainly works for me.
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here are some additional tips from other players:

    - If you get sweaty hands, keep a towel close by. Nothing is worse than kicking *** on a track and your controller slips a bit and you **** it up.

    - If you find yourself purposefully hurting the rider, and don't know why, then it's time to seek therapy.

    - Find people who are near your skill level to compete with. I would suggest having a couple - possibly someone who is slightly better than you who you can learn that next little trick or timesaver from, and someone who you feel you should be ahead of all the time, but could quite easily catch you.

    - Warm up with tracks that you enjoy playing, that way even if you don't come close to beating your time, you are still having fun.

There's a lot of stuff I agree with here, and some I don't but I definitely agree with these two. I tend to play better while I'm in a party chat with other people who are playing Trials. I usually ask what tracks they are playing, and play the same track at the same time.

As for the second point, before yesterday, I only played the in-game tracks once in the past couple weeks. Before that, I was playing Battlefield BC2 and Stacking. Yesterday I managed to improve times on 4 tracks in about an hour and a half. Taking a break helps me remove the bad habits that are in muscle memory, and allows me to deal with obstacles in different ways.

Something to add is to find people who are near your skill level to compete with. I would suggest having a couple - possibly someone who is slightly better than you who you can learn that next little trick or timesaver from, and someone who you feel you should be ahead of all the time, but could quite easily catch you. I know jook used to check his rearview mirror for me, and then he'd post some time that I couldn't compete with.

Wow that's very good, I never looked at it that way. I modified the muscle memory tip.

a better way to word it for someone shooting for number 1, "shoot for number 1, aim for shaving off seconds instead of just 1st place." if the wr is 40secs and your aiming for 35, think about how hard it would be for anyone to beat that beast time. just an example.
diggin this thread by the way.

i like to play custom tracks when im stuck. if im having trouble ranking up i usually get some tracks, play them a couple times (get used to a new environment, plus could teach different ways to get passed certain obstacles. also, resets muscle memory because its a completely new track.)
