im getting a new computer soon, so i figured to get the most bang for my buck would be to build it myself. however, im a complete noob at this, so im not sure about half the parts i should be looking for, and what price i should be paying for them. i have my dad to help me build the thing, so theres no problems there. Also, i might be able to get a decent discount either from reading university, or with my NUS extra card (i get these tech related discounts)
i have a budget of about £300-£400 ($482-$643) for the entire build
i will definitly need:
- Motherboard
- CPU
- GPU
- graphics card
- video card
- sound card (thanks for reminding me JJ)
- resonable sized hard drive (doubt i'll need more than 1/2TB)
- case
- DVD drive
- some decent cooling (im on the PC quite a bit)
- a bunch of other stuff inside a computer i dont even know about
i might need:
- mouse (mine is terribad)
- keyboard
i definitly dont need:
- screen (i can use my TV as the screen at uni)
- speakers
- headphones (getting some of them already)
- green, power saving tech (im going for performance, dont care about the power usage)
where i really need help right now is knowing roughly what i should be spending on each part. i mean, ive found some 2.8Ghz quad core processors for under $100, but is that gonna comprimise everything else?
also, if you know of any good comparison sites for any of the stuff that is up to date, i'd be very interested, along with any places that get me great deals.
i kinda feel like a kid who's only just learnt to swim being shoved into an olympic swimming pool, so any help would be greatly apreciated, no atter how small it is
You forgot an soundcard...even If you dont really need it! Anyway what is going to be the main thing you are going to do with the computer?
thanks, completely forgot about the sound card (added to OP now)
mostly its gonna be used for uni work, so a bunch of programming, however, im hoping to finally get into the world of PC gaming, which is why im looking for something damn fast.
also, something that lasts me through my enitre course at uni (4 years) would be great
*edit*
oh, im also gonna try and do some recording of my own, so i'll be getting myself an internal hauppage PVR when they release it as a (probably late) bday present
You wont need an haupauge hd pvr if you want to record your computer. Depending how fast it is at the end you could just use fraps...or any other programm llike that. I'll think about the hardware aswell. It may takes some time...but I'll message you back.
Your going to need the command and conquer box set... make sure it has generals and zero hour...
was planning on recording xbox gameplay mostly, not computer gameplay. if i use the same screen for both i assumed i'd need the hauppage, is this right?Originally Posted by JJtheGerman
also, thans so much for the help so far..... im a bit of a noob to all this![]()
You can build a really nice desktop for around 500-600$ With all you mentioned including a nice stick of RAM. My girlfriends brother owns a shop and built me a really cool computer. The case is even cooler! haha. It all depends on what you want to do with it really. Mine was built mainly for gaming; however, I rarely play games on my computer but I had to get it just in case! haha
I'm looking to grab a capture card in the near future. I just got to figure out how to use one![]()
When I bought my computer for 1.200€ like 1 and a half year ago. The main thing I wanted to do was mapping, working and playing videogames. Well the people on xboxlive just cant let me go and thats why I pretty much never played any games on the computer...sad story
We love you, JJ!
