whats a good, cheap capture card?

the thread thats been going in the tech discuaaion hasnt been getting much attention, so i thought i'd post it here instead.

personally, im looking for a cheapo capture card that comes with all the software you'll need for it (or has easliy findable software for it).
i am not looking for video editing software because my dad has some great video editing software (a cut down version of what the BBC use to edit Dr Who no less)

also in the thread, Mung and jhitman are looking for the same deal, but with video editing software.

the one suggestion we have had is the Dazzle DVC 100,which comes to £40 overall. anyone have any more suggestions for us?

Go for the Dazzle if you're not after something amazing, the quality is OK but it gets the job donne. However if you have alittle more cash to splash around go for a Hauppauge HD PVR (£150 - £200), I'm not to knowledagble about it but I'm considering gettting one some time this year.

Right, now I'll let a pro take over.

this is the one i bought.
it works ok. see an example here.
i used some of the editing software to add the text. theres maybe 20 text options. theres like 30 or so different types of transitions you can use. cutting frames and everything is pretty simple. all in all, it was a good buy for me, and bieng not so computer smart, i could still figure it out, but sometimes i hit things and have no idea what it means so that leads me to believe theres a lot more i could be doing.
i also needed 3 of these. male to female Y splitters
and 1 of this. RCA av cable

Im savin up for a HP PVR 1212, same brand that murdoc, jarrett and les has. The video quality alone is worth the price. However Dazzle is the cheapest brand i know and its still...watchable, i guess.

I personally think you should save a bit of money and get the better one.... My opinion at least. Says the guy who is typing on his brand new laptop that cost $315 bucks.

    Hey all,

I know that the Hauppauge is a little expensive, but if you have a desktop computer (not a laptop), there's a solution that's about 60 - 70 dollars cheaper coming soon:

    Hauppauge Internal Capture Card

This solution may be a little more favourable for many people, as it has a smaller footprint, and can handle HDMI input (the current HD PVR can't). The downside is that you have to do surgery on your computer to get it in there. Hopefully the drivers will be as simple as the 1212.

I'll post again a bit later with some more options for you all. Let me know what price ranges you want, and that'll help me out a bit.

I ordered the elgato. I'm fairly certain it's a Mac exclusive so on the off chance you're one of us, that's an option. I heard that Machinima uses Dazzle but I tend to doubt that since it's the lowest quality for the most part. Mr360games on Youtube uses the hauppauge and makes beautiful videos.
