So I have two xboxs, long story and One had RRoD and the other just recently had read disc error (still under warranty going to send it in but I wanted to try and fix the RRoD first so I wouldn't be totally without xbox.)
I successfully fixed the RRoD! But I noticed the disc drive making noises. I opened it up and found a "quick fix" but apparently that made it worse....Something went wrong, if anyone could help that would be awesome! The disc drive sounds like a garbage disposal and 50/50 reads the disc.
Mine does the same thing - good luck having it read discsOriginally Posted by Jarr3tt88![]()
U can order a new drive online and fix it but its advanced stuff but there are videos in YouTube to help
OK, you may or not have a big problem. I don't know what your 'quick fix' was, so i am just assuming that you need a new drive for the purpose of this post.
First off, my experience with the RROD fix is that it may return pretty quickly so you may want to think twice about how much money you spend on repairing an old one when the new ones are relatively cheap (and your warranty repair) are on the way.
If you still want to fix the RROD box, here are a few things to consider.
xbox's are not like PC's in that you can't just plug and play DVD drives. They are fundamentally linked to the hardware inside the xbox so removing one from the other without any modification is going to fail.
If you want to replace the DVD drive, here is what you need to do.
**Before I go on, what i am about to tell you to do to fix your xbox is quite similar to the process for modifying your xbox for less than legal purposes. As this is a Trials forum where it is sold via DLC, then this will not in any way harm trials sales etc, but if there are any forum rules about these types of discussions, I am happy for a mod to remove this. I will also try not to give too much away as I do respect the rights of game developers as you all should!**
There is a key (unique identifier) that is stored within your DVD drive that is what the motherboard etc will be looking for. Remove your DVD drive, it stops working. What you need to do is be able to read this key, extract it, find a similar DVD drive out of another xbox (can get these online) and then modify the key stored within the new DVD drive. Once the two are back in sync, the xbox should be happy again.
You will need
Opening tools to get at the guts of the xbox ( I assume out of warranty anyway as this voids your warranty)
A particular internal PCI SATA card for your PC
A SATA cable
‘software’ that allows you to read/write firmware to the xbox DVD drive
Lots of time.…
Basically, the process is as follows (it may differ depending on the solution you go with).
Open the xbox up to expose the DVD drive. Disconnect the internal SATA cable. Connect the SATA cable from the xbox dvd drive to your PCI card. Load up software. Turn on xbox (making sure you have connected both the power AND the AV cables), read the key multiple times to ensure you have it right . Store the key somewhere safe. Cross your fingers. Swap out the xbox DVD drives. Open software again and this time write the new key into the DVD drive. And then test…. You are not actually modifying the firmware so this will remain as stock, it is just that the key is located within the firmware so you have to modify this. Do not modify anything else.
I would suggest you do heaps of reading and watching online and ask around. This is far from impossible and should get your xbox back up and running with a new drive. It should also not cause any live banning etc but as always… do so at your own risk.
Please note, the above procedure is currently legal within Australia (to the best of my knowledge) however I am unaware of where you are or the relevant legalities. In Canada for example, I believe it is illegal.
You will not be able to do anything with the above information alone. I am providing to show that it is complicated so you may realise that it might just not be worth the hassle.
Hope it helped you???
PM me if you need more.
Hey shady thanks for the info! Unfortunately for you I have fixed the drive before I saw the thread xD
The quick fix was gluing in magnets, what I did wrong was put them upside down....I couldn't take them back out when I thought that was the problem this morning so I just dismissed it. But my dad helped fix it and he had a magnet, so we got it out, flipped it and tested, no more loud noises! So I'm waiting for the glue to dry and will test it out tomorrow night. Hopefully all will be well, the glue will hold, and the magnets WON'T be coming out again. Here is the article for anyone here has a loud drive and is out of warranty.

Also here is the article for fixing RRoD which worked BEAUTIFULLY!So proud I was able to fix this myself
Two birds with one stone is pretty good! Only do this if you're out of warranty, if not send it back to M$
Llamma's Xbox 360 3RLOD (three red light error) X-Clamp Fix Tutorial
No probs.
I have fixed my 2006 xbox about 2 years ago with the xclamp fix and is still going strong! Good luck mate, because I have since fixed 4 other xbox's with the xclamp and all have RROD again????
Well my xbox HAS had the xclamp fixOriginally Posted by FatShadythink?) and that got RRoD again which I just fixed. Hopefully it will keep longer, if not I know what to do to fix it
Pretty dam easy to do! I'm not big into electronics, so I'm so proud I was able to fix it. I love the internet so much, idk how people got along with out it back in the day LOL
Mee too.. If you have a look at my above response, that is just a couple of years of playing around on various forums and websites. Teh Internets are awesome!!!Originally Posted by Jarr3tt88
If you do end up needing to get a replacement drive at some point, llama.com. They have all the info and tutorials and a forum if you need help.
yup that is where I've been getting my help from, with the RRoD.Originally Posted by noobaroniNcheez
Update: Sadly after I put the xbox back together after I fixed the RRoD, the noisy drive, now its not reading any discs at all. This is such a disappointment, GAH!It was working great!! I don't know what happened, this sucks so bad. I'm going to try one last time tonight to get this thing working then give up and smash it with a sledge hammer if M$ won't do anything about it and fix it for me considering they screwed me out of a warranty to begin with....
Yea I was looking into the option, I rather not have been putting more money into this console. I found drives for about $25, cheap but seems complicated to do. I don't wanna end up getting a console/GT ban from fixing what they broke...Originally Posted by oROTTENo
I'm guessing you aren't under warranty anymore? You should try and fix it yourself, I didn't really know what I was doing but the llama site help take the console and drive apart to get to fixing what I neededOriginally Posted by 420Also you prob have the loose magnets like I did. The loud sound and the failure to read discs both from the loose magnets. Make sure you put shiny side up xD
Edit re-update: Apparently the glue wasn't strong enough for the magnet, when I opened up the drive again, the magnets were out of their place again. I need some super strong glue. Good to know that its still fixable xD This also might be the reason my arcade xbox is broken, and why other people have problems with open disc drive.
