    Should you watch replays???

    Hi all,

This post is to discuss the way in which we play this game and the pros and cons of the replay system. It is just about my thoughts on how I want to go about playing Big Thrills when it comes out. Feel free to contribute or not. And yes, it is clear that it is personal choice whether or not to watch a replay. This is about my choice and whether or not you agree/disagree.

I have been playing for 12+ months. I have recently been working on my ranking and the easiest way to do this is to watch the best riders in action, then attempt to mimic their technique. I am still a good few seconds off the best times, but you can make significant improvements by learning from the best.

Here is the thing though. I am starting to feel that a large part of the fun of this game is that you figure out the quickest way. I would hate to think what my ranking would be without the benefit of the replay system. To me, watching replays is kind of like reading a walkthrough to get through a game on your first playthrough.

What I am thinking about is not watching replays, at least for a few weeks/months to see how good 'I' am, rather then just copying others runs. I made a suggestion that there should be a competition where the replays are locked for viewing, everyone sets the best time based off their own ability, including figuring out shortcuts etc then the replays are opened up after the comp ends. This would really sort out who the best really are.

So, I am thinking about not watching replays for the big thrills tracks and just enjoying figuring things out for myself, just to see how far I have come. Interested to hear what you think about either the competition idea, orif you could be diciplined enough to not watch replays???

    Re: Should you watch replays???

I try to do the tracks on my own THEN use replays, and just because you watch replays doesnt make you a bad player, because you still have to execute the technique. A walkthrough will tell you where stuff is, how to get it, tips, tricks etc. while replays show how one rider does it, and you try the technique yourself. Their both similar, but my feeling is if replays were like walkthroughs, Anyone who watched a world record replay would be able to match or come close to that time, which isnt the case because the world records usually use techniques that are either perfect, near perfect, or unique to the player( new shortcut or timesaver). As for the dlc im just going to not watch replays until I need them or care enough about my rank. JMO

Shady, I've thought about this a lot too.

My skills have been improving a lot lately, and while playing customs I often come up with some shortcuts or time-saving techniques on my own. That said, I'm still nowhere near the level of the top riders, but I would love to see how I stack up against their times without seeing their runs.

I wont be able to resist. I will watch the top times... Then get a top 10 time or so (on the 1st day). Then it will gradually drop down into the hundreds till I go back and get a better time a few months later.

    Re: Should you watch replays???

On official tracks I'm tempted to watch replays because it's not cheating (if it was they wouldn't have replays), and it helps me get an edge over those who don't use the advantage presented to them. I know what you mean about it "spoiling" the fun of discovering things on your own though. That's why I like not watching the replays at first, and then, if I'm still really far down, I might. And also, trying to be competitive on some custom tracks is fun because there are no replays.

I think you should have the option to allow people to see your replay or not (which you later should be able to change to allow for people to see your run).
I am just now playing a game on the iphone Stick Stunt Biker and I can see my own best times and replays but not others, and on some tracks I really have to figure out where they managed to shave of 1-2 seconds instead of just watching the replay and mimic their technique.
I think there would be alot more "racingdiversity" on how some players reach top times instead of ALL players just mimic the shortcut person X just found out.

"Racingdiversity" - The degree by which the racingiveness is diversified.

    I like it. lol

Not sure I agree with the personal preference for show/hide replay. As soon as one good rider shows their replay, none of the others matter. But the idea that hidden replays, or at least for a period of time would certainly be an interesting experiment. It would be funny to see say the top 50 riders, after not watching any replays, if they would all come up with the same racing line and technique????

Yeah you got a good point there, but hidden for a period of time could be cool and as you say, see if the top riders come up with the same technique after maybe a week or so.

or, if they can even make top 50 without having something to work from! I often wonder how many of the top 50 replays are there purely through their own skill and how many copy the other riders inputs from their replays?

I know my highest replays are from watching the top riders and copying what they do as much as i can, but apart from that I do enjoy watching some of the top replays just to appreciate how skillful some of them are!

oh i straight up copy replays. I dont copy inputs cause that would be really hard, but i usually get the gist of how it's done and copy or attempt to. but of course those replays are available to everybody so if you got Top 50 u likely earned it.

but i'm not one of those guys who discovers shortcuts etc....

i'm willing to forgo replays for the first 24 hrs and post my times.
