A Brand New Redlynx Game based on Trials and the Editor ?
I know a relatively small developer like Redlynx probably has more than enough projects on it's hands but I thought it was worth posting this as it seems such a natural fit for them and something to consider for the future.
As we know from games like Shadow Complex, Limbo, Prince of Persia and so many others on Xbox Live, clever 2D platformer based games will always have a huge market. Going back to Miner 2049er and Manic Miner and all the way through to Mario's blockbusting games, Another World, Flashback etc. they will always be with us in one form of another.
My question is why Redlynx don't adapt their game engines and editor to make a killer puzzle based platform game at some point.
Easier to say than to do but the game engine seems perfect for doing so as does the editor. Yes, you would have to adapt it quite a bit and one of Trials selling points is the incredibly easy yet versatile bike handling mechanics, but I can so easily imagine a game with devious puzzles and traps and the superb graphics of TrialsHD transformed into a challenging set of large 'rooms' instead of tracks in which everyone still competes to get the best times and scores.
It would probably need to include baddies and possibly weaponry but the physics based world is so ripe for creating devious rooms with a well animated protaganist climbing and running and pushing and falling his way through cunningly crafted traps. With either escaping or grabbing as many collectables as quickly as possible in a room being the aim. Instead of Ramps there would be more emphasis on ropes and ladders and slides etc. And the object set would be heavily skewed toward trap objects with creative ways to dispatch the game hero featuring heavily.
Now some will say hasn't that already been done in little big planet?
To an extent yes, but a Redlynx game would be different enough and to be frank we can go way, WAY back to 1983 where Lode Runner was one of the first platformers with a built in game editor giving it longevity.
And that is where Redlynx has an advantage because there is already a community of creative editors and users who would feel right at home constructing ingenious rooms and graphically amazing rooms. If the fatalities of the Rider are anything to go by in some of the trackmakers creations then it's clear that creating challenging puzzle based rooms would be second nature to some of them.
Graphically with creative use of lighting and objects a Redlynx platformer could spawn some beautiful rooms to explore and solve.
Now this is all in the realms of 'what if ?' but had Microsoft any sense they would throw money and resources at Redlynx to create something like this as Trials is such an amazing Live creation and advertisement for their platform and this could have an even wider appeal.
I hope the developers don't mind too much about me musing out loud but their professionalism and creativity on Trials just begs for more games like this utilising their talent and through them the talents of gamers equipped with a Redlynx editor.
Of course Redlynx may have had this idea long ago anyway.

This sounds like my kind of game, kind of like trials without the bike, free running. Lost planet 2 time trials were kind of like this but it would look so much better side scrolling 2d.
