So when going backwards down a hill (the final beam on King of the Hill comes to mind), do you use the accelerator to slow your backward progress? Or do you use the brake?
I've always been an accelerator man myself, but I was watching some KotH replays and didn't hear the tell-tell engine rev I'm used to hearing, so noticed they were using the brake instead.
Using the brake never really even occurred to me, because I tend to think of it more of a "reverse gear that also serves to slow forward progress" than a true brake. I've never gotten a good feel for when the "braking" stops, and when the "reverse gear" kicks in. Anyone care to give some tips for how to use the brake effectively when going backwards?
Accelerator everytime. Going backwards and using the brake makes you stop a little before reversing.
If the brake was just the brake and not reverse as well then I probably would use it instead.

i use brake if you can either hook underneath the thing your going backwards on or you're backflipping off it. i use gas if i want to drop straight down, but i still feather brake a bit.
I usually use the accelerator, but there are times like heet mentioned where i would choose to use the brake.
On KoTH, I sometimes use the brake when going backwards down the beam, because i actually think you can do it faster that way. go backwards down the beam, hit the brake, and backflip to landing. I don't know how it compares for time as I haven't tried it in awhile, but it's not too difficult to pull off.
i like to use a bit of both, sometimes at the same time. really depends on the situation.
youve got a good point though ive never really thought about it much...
