I'm pretty sure he already has Trials HD... [EDIT]

...on second thought maybe I should start a flame war

For more pc info, hit the windows key + R then in the box that appears type "dxdiag" and hit return. That will bring up more info than you'll ever need (top left of the "display 1" tab will tell you your graphics card name)

    i have a
    NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTX
Chip type: GeForce 8800 GTX (duh)
    DAC Type: Integrated RAMDAC

dunno how much smarter i got from knowing this

Re: Trials crashes way too much

Hmm... OK, currently I'm running a GeForce 9800GTX, which is a very similar video card. You definitely should be able to run Trials 2 SE with the settings maxed on that computer. You have a couple of options. I think what I would do if it was my computer is to download an overclocking utility. I use EVGA Precision*. EVGA is a company that makes video cards, but their utility works on any GeForce video card (mine is actually made by XFX, and it works just fine). You can get it here: http://www.evga.com/precision/. I think it requires a registration, but it is free.

Once you have it downloaded and installed, you actually can use it to monitor your video card temperature, and maybe see if it's overheating. You can run the utility and then run Trials 2 SE in a window, watching the "GPU temperature" graph as you go. Mine goes up to a little over 70 degrees C while playing Trials 2, which is fairly good for a video card. Each card varies a bit, but I think on an 8800 GTX you don't want to see that go over 80 degrees. If you can test that out, that would probably help narrow down the issue - obviously, post back if you have any trouble .

    * Incidentally, if you don't want to use EVGA Precision, there are other tools that will do the trick

EDIT: Also, as a side note, I'd be totally bummed if you stopped playing - I've watched a lot of your replays (since they're always at or near the top), so I really hope we can get you back up and running!

Re: Trials crashes way too much

This is not a game bug.

According to the information you give, it's very likely that your graphics card is overheating. Check that your case ventilation is working well: Dust the inside of the case, check that all fans are running at proper speed and check that the air filters are not filled with dust to prevent the airflow. If your card is factory overclocked, set the clocks to defaults (some factory overclocked models will hang on Trials 2 and other programs that stress your GPU very much). Also check that you have some free space around your PC (it needs to get some fresh air). We have had some similar reports, and those players have fixed this issue by either cleaning up their case, fixing a broken fan or removing factory overclock from their GPU.

While the low mode graphics is simple, the game can easily render more than 1000 frames per second. The game is optimized to use 100% of your graphics card performance. The simpler settings you use, the more frames the game outputs (so the GPU gets stressed pretty much similarly in all modes). I recommend enabling "wait for vertical refresh" from your graphics card control panel to limit the game frame rate to your monitor refresh rate (usually 60 fps). This way the game will still be perfectly smooth, but does not render more frames than your monitor can output. This way the GPU is utilized much less, and will cause much less heat. It's likely that this change alone will drop your GPU usage and heat so low that the game should run stable.

To test if your GPU overheating is causing the problem, I suggest downloading some test programs that fully use your GPU resources, and run them for couple of hours straight. Furmark is a good choice for this testing:
    http://www.ozone3d.net/benchmarks/fur/

If your computer crashes on Furmark, you should improve your GPU or your case ventilation and cooling. It will tax your GPU even more than Trials 2, making it easier to detect the issue. Alternatively you can run some new graphics intensive games that stress your GPU a lot. Many games have a looping demo sequence that you can use (leave it on for several hours).

Thanks for the suggestions ppl. I cleaned my computer (found a dead mosquito in there!) and I *THINK* I got the latest drivers for my graphics card, have not had a problem since! I'm hoping this is the end of it.

Re: Trials crashes way too much

I had a similar problem a about a year ago, I was pretty sure it was my GPU overheating so I bought a brand new card, and the problem persisted. My PC totally freezed. and there was even some huge artifacting for a second or two while it froze... Turns out my problem was the power supply fan, it stopped working so the power supply overheated. This is probably not your problem but one of the first things I do now when I have a similar problem is to make sure all my fans work properly.

Got the same problem myself now...it suddenly freezes and my computer shuts down, feels like overheating. Think a "coolerboard" or how to call it would help?

    *Edit*

    Got a laptop
