Technique for going down steep hills?

I've noticed that just about all the time, when players get a top ranked time on a track, that on very steep downhills, they just coast down the hill. Why is this? I would think it would be better to punch the gas down a hill, but since nobody (who gets a really good time) seems to do this, I've thought otherwise. Is it really faster to coast down a really steep downhill as opposed to using full throttle?

If the hill/slope is big enough (that of the one in Epic Jumps or at the end of Wheres The Ground) then yes, but if the slope isn't as big and you shouldn't coast because you can't build up enough speed.
To try out for yourself, create a very quick custom map, and make a Hugeee downward slope, then make an impossible jump that you can't make if you pump your gas on the way down, but if you coast it, you'll see a dramatic effect in speed and would probably be able to make the jump.

    So yes.

    what a coincidence!

i only found out about this rolling down the hill being faster than accelerating last night while playing a RedRider custom i'd not played before.

i knew on Where's the Ground you get to fly over the finish line if you roll down the previous hill, but i honestly thought that was some sort of track-specific glitch

If you get going faster than the bike can go, then the tires just make you gain traction if you coast you keep gaining speed

Yeah exactly. The engine turns the wheel which makes it only go to a specific speed before it can't go any faster.
But if your coasting down a long slope, the engine isn't on so the wheel's are gonna keep spinning faster and faster as it goes down, making it more faster than the gas
(only if the slope is long enough to pick up the speed.)

someone should make a hill from as high as you can go to low as can go, then a huge jump, that would be crazy

That makes perfect sense; thanks everyone. I was wondering why I sometimes had trouble even making the last jump in Where's the Ground when some people practically flew across the finish line without touching ground. I was like; they can't be that good.......can they?

On the topic of huge jumps, someone should integrate a ski jump sort of thing in a custom track. You know those signs with numbers? Those could work, or other background obstacles so people could track how far they've flown.
