Trialshd.net is a way for us to provide for ourselves what most, if not all, of us wanted to be incorporated into the game: Custom track leaderboards. The site may not be perfect but neither is the game... Does that keep us from playing trials? I Really enjoy seeing who got what time and posting my own times. I also loved the weekend challenges. Skumbag I know I'm not as good at making tracks as you but I too put in 12+ hours a day working on tracks. Tracks that I give away. We put HOURS of work into our tracks, why is it so bad to ask for a few minuets of time in return. I mean the friends list is going to get full and there has to be someway to choose who stays and who goes... most people I guess would just remove the folks towards the bottom. But why is this anymore fair then what I'm doing? This way it promotes the site, and the more people using the site the better IMO. It may seem like it's only trials commune tracks that matter but in reality there are 700 tracks posted on the site. The more people use the site and ask people to post times the more new users we have. The more new users the more new tracks posted... it snowballs and eventually a lot of people will not only know about trialshd.net but they will want post times and won't have to be asked... especially if we get global points leaderboards...
A seemingly naive suggestion for improvement would be to simply enable more comprehensive browsing of the entire track database. Right now, I can only see the top 10 ranked tracks, the 10 most popular tracks, and the 10 most recently posted tracks. What about the 700+ other tracks that MurdocLoch is referring to? Unless I know exactly what to search for, those tracks are lost in a sea of flat lists with no apparent sort order (at least none that I can divine from the UI) that are not-so-obviously reached via the "Search" page.
I'd like to see a new "Browse" top level page that let's me browse through the entire track database. I should be able to sort by date posted, popularity, rank (what exactly is the difference between rank and popularity anyway???), alphabetically by track name, or alphabetically by author. Filtering to a particular difficulty range would also be nice, as would be the option to filter out tracks that don't have a video posted. When viewing a list of tracks, I should be able to see the community's collective rating of that track. Another nice to have would be to also have the number of leaderboard entries for each track available up at the list level.
I posted my first track on TrialsHD.net a few weeks ago (which most of my personal friends have tried and loved), and only one person contacted me with a Friend Request to download it before it fell off the top 10 most recent tracks. I've been avoiding pimping my own tracks here on the forums as I wanted to wait until I had a couple more tracks shared out, but at this point, I'd love to start getting feedback on the one's I've already shared...
^^^ not naive at all something like that idea would make browsing alot easier
Great ideas - I second these - and i'll add that i think there should be a log your score link on the actual leaderboard itself. Also the log your score page should say the name of the track you are logging.Originally Posted by Trango
I think you're failing to see what TrialsHD.net really is. It's a place for people to post their tracks and for people who play those tracks, rank the track and then post their times. That is it. Why is trials commune so popular, because they figured out how to work the site. You on the other want the half assed version of "I'll post tracks but no one has to post their times.' This is NOT how the site is to be used. People need to post their times if they want a track to stay on top. Top 10 and "Popularity" only come when people start posting their times. 'Most popular' are only tracked by how many people have posted their times for each specific track. 'Top Ranked' has to do w/ the Star System you see on each track.Originally Posted by SKUMBAG
If you want to stay on top of each, then ASK people to post their times and rank your track. Trials Commune isn't the only ones on there. Lord Melchett has stayed on top since the beginning. Actually before TC came along Melchett completely owned the Top Ranked and Most Popular. Why? Because he asked if people could post their times or rank his tracks when they were done. He put himself out there and created tracks almost once or twice a week which is what TC is doing, promoting their tracks and asking people to post their times. I find new people on TrialsHD all the time. I search the users under all, and if they label themselves as a track Creator then I'll add them to my FL, download their tracks and use the site accordingly, post my times as much as i can and rank their tracks.
Personally, i just don't think you're using the tools handed to you correctly. You're trying to install glass floors w/ a hammer and well... that's your fault.
To keep things in right path.
What GameScrub has done with trialshd.net is really amazing job. He has created too for all of custom track creators to compare times, find tracks etc.. Its amazing job and we should all be graceful for that.
If few people have created tracks that are popular that is nobody’s fault or reason to attack anybody. Maybe instead we should think together and suggest how search function or other ideas how more wider selection of tracks are played.
Finally lots of people have said that this is good forum because people are friendly and help each others. Please let’s keep it that way.
Whilst I can see both sides of the debate and being fairly new to the scene myself, my observation is this.
You either force people to post times with the threat of removing them if they don't, or you tracks can fall into obscurity and be enjoyed only by a few people.
Personally I think the work Gamescrub has put in is exceptional. For someone to make a site off their own merit for a community is above and beyond the call of duty.
BUT....
Things can only ever be improved upon, and that comes with feedback.
I agree that the site needs a browse function for tracks, and maybe a filter to organise those tracks in a way you see fit.
Also I say that the most popular and top ranked should be filters for track and creator browsing instead of a top 10 that very few people ever reach.
I have had alot of people play my tracks that are on my friends list and it's always the same few people that actually post times but what can you do?
Until Redlynx find a way to do something along the lines of Bungie and create a way to get custom times uploaded from the console to TrialsHD.net there will never be an efficient way of building a true leaderboard.
I think that Trials Commune have just been very clever in the way that they have promoted their tracks and have somehow managed to attract people that will use TrialsHD.net in a religious manner.
It's just a shame we don't all have that superpower.
I totally agree - we should ALL be grateful for the effort put in by Gamescrub and everyone else who contributes to making trialshd more than just a game. At the moment i can only see trialshd getting bigger and better and the fanbase increasing all the time, the fact that you have the option to post your custom tracks or just post times of your favourite tracks made by others is amazing and to do this for free is even better! Be happy with what you have especially if someone else did 99% of the work and if your still not happy put the time and effort in yourself and make your own custom leaderboards. Also if there are over 700,000 people playing the game now, if each person made just 1 track and wanted to post them all in 1 place i think Gamescrub's computor would melt so maybe others should make there own custom leaderboards.
Just to set the record straight. I'm not bad mouthing Trials commune. I like their maps, I just think that the current look of the creator leaderboards is RIDICULOUS. My name has already been scorn here. About 1000 or so plus mapping hours to bring you guy's some of the nastiest lines, And now some of you are against me. And don't even know why. Funny, To see my maps, R0T IN's maps, Or HEETSAUCE's maps with 4 people on their leaderboards. After i send out the TrialsHD.net messege, And a voice message, Along with titling my main thread things like..... ROACH MOTEL IS NOW ON TrialsHD.net. Still nothing. It's all good. I'm gonna go make another one of my, MAPS.
If anyone's got any positive solutions. Those would be best. And we are all listening.
I totally know what you mean skum, some of the best maps, have practically no times posted. I made over twenty maps before i started trials commune and even held a tournament for 1600 Microsoft points... 3 people posted times for the tournament. none of my old tracks got anywhere near the leaderboards. I asked for people to post times every time i made a new track but it never worked, not like it did with commune. The creator leaderboards are ridiculous and there are many tracks that deserve to be on it that aren't.Originally Posted by SKUMBAG
