Trials HD - Tips & Tricks

I've been scouring the forums a bit, but I've not found a section/topic devoted to general tips & tricks. Things I think myself & others might find valuable:

    1. Section-specific tactics, such as, "How do I clear the i-beam near the very end of Inferno II?"

    2. General tactics - things like landing with your back wheel first to maintain speed, tactics for getting over walls perpendicular to your vector (small boxes, pipes, etc), climbing strategies, etc.

I've found Youtube is actually a poor vehicle for explaining how things are done in Trials HD. Much of it is feel, and difficult to explain, especially while trying to keep up with the pace of activity in a replay.

I think however that there are still helpful things that can be shared w/ newbies like me that will make things a little bit easier.

Is there such a section already? If not, I'd be happy to start one, but given that I've not even beat all the extreme maps yet, surely there are folks better suited to creating such a section.

I think that this is a good idea but would need to be kept in check and sorted to ensure that the information is easy to find. I would suggest having a section on each track so each update actually contributes to almost a wiki of sorts on the enture game. Each poster would then intro their comments by Skill/race and track name, then section of the track/entire walkthrough.

Then however someone would have to moderate this to ensure only the best bits are sumerised.

Perhaps this is overkill but in my early days, I would have loved a tip on the double pallets in Inferno and I am still struggling on the I bream.

Agree or disagree is cool, just my thoughts on setting this up right from the start so it is not a masive forum that is actually difficult for a newbie to read adn practice from.

    Cheers,

I like the idea in theory as well, and am also wondering about the most effective way to put it into practice. I've asked for a lot of help on these forums, and that seems to work for me. The people here are a wonderful resource and almost never do you find someone who intends to come across as rude.

The other thing with a wiki sort of idea is that sometimes there are several ways to do things, for different skill levels. The techniques that many of the people on this forum would use are not the ones that I would choose to use, because I'm not that good. Replays are helpful too, when you know how to pull off some of the moves you need to.

I would say that the replays of the top times are always a good place to start just to learn the layout of the course before you get going. Knowing what is coming after the next checkpoint is a must for a good time as the exit off the previous obstacle determines how easily and fluidly you can clear the next.
Read the help tips in the game to familiarise yourself with the way to perform techniques in the game like bunnyhopping and sping jumping and then use the tutorial levels to get your technique down... this helped me no end.
And above all, no matter how frustrating, just keep trying. It took me a long time to become comfortable with the handling of the bikes but when you finally nail "King of the Hill" with no faults it is oh so worth it!

dunno whether you've checked out my ONE fault replay (aaaaaargh!) on Inferno yet. but i've got the I beam nailed now, as of last night. can do it consistently, not using a method i've seen. just stand upright (neither back nor forward) near the checkpoint then LT for a millisecond, before then pressing RT and LEFT on the stick and he'll make it over everytime. it's no special method, just pure positioning. when i discovered it i made the jump 7 times in a row

now if only i could do the pipes as consistently...

but yeah i'd love for some of the top players to come in this topic and give us general tips. cos i don't understand where they get speed from in some cases. you can't always tell how they do what they do from replay.

Well I'm not a top player as far as global overall goes but I have Top 100 in all extreme tracks, currently at #3 for Goin Up and #14 for Brown Boxes and have a few hard tracks in the Top 20's so maybe some tips I can give could help some of guys but there are much better players that could probably give some better advice.

I would say when Time Trialing to always view replays that are reasonably close to you. Say you are Ranked #200 on a track, take a look at the replay of the guy at #150 and a few others around it as this will help you build gradually. By looking at the Top replays that all using advanced techniques and trying to copy will only make you frustrated.

That "speed" you talk about, to me, just comes from doing the track over and over. You get so confident at certain sections that the extra speed just comes from sticking all the obstacles together. I have to reiterate ITS ALL ABOUT THE PRACTICE!! Thats why its so hard to give any genuine "technique" tips because after a while you develop the touch required for hitting the obstacles cleanly and smoothly. To get my Goin Up time to where it is I couldn't begin to imagine how many retries it takes. But thats what its about, doing 1000 dud runs for that one good one. Keep in mind in those 1000 "dud" runs you have been gradually building your skill for the track so this is all valuable play time. Don't get frustrated by messing up. Its part of the game. I would say in 3 or so hours of running a track like Goin Up I would be lucky to finish 3 runs as it doesn't even take a fault at this point to make me restart, only a mistake which costs time.

Biggest problem is you get awesome at the first stages of the track and the endings of the tracks take longer to get down simply because you do them alot less but you get there in the end. You can see my ending on Goin Up is nowhere near as polished as the 2 guys above me so I still got to work on it.

Another point is, and this is especially true for the Hard tracks that they all have a "flow" to them. I would recommend putting alot of time into a track like Technique and you will really begin to see this. It carries over to most of the tracks, if not all if completely mastered I suppose.

Also for players that are not too advanced yet, it is best to build your way up to extreme tracks by not just finishing the hard tracks but by at least getting gold medal (or low faults). This will help build up the skills you need for extreme tracks because at first they are very daunting.

I will try and answer any specific questions but I will always answer with ............. and practice. <---without this any tips are meaningless.

    Hopes this helps someone.

wow, nice long post Patriot. i'm sure people will find that helpful.

you're right though about practise. this is just one of those games where time alone seems to improve your skills exponentially. and you can't put your finger on exactly how you've improved. you just get more of a feel for the game. you and the bike become one being!

This why I try to resist restarting a track when I fault.

Re: Trials HD - Tips & Tricks

To echo OzPatriot's point - I've gotten a lot of mileage out of watching the lower-ranked videos. Much more in fact than from watching the top scores.

Great example: on the first extreme map, "brown boxes", there is a checkpoint think it's the 4th checkpoint or so) right before you have to leap over a gap to a smallish box, then another leap to get to the next checkpoint. If you maintain momentum from the previous climb, it's much easier than to do it from a dead stop at the checkpoint.

The issue was, I faulted at the checkpoint but couldn't figure out how to leap over the gap to the next set of boxes. The top scores were no help because of course those guys didn't fault! I had to get down to position 2000 or so to find people that had faulted that particular checkpoint.

Where in the game does it teach you to bunny hop? And what is Spring Jumping? I've not read anything about either technique, though I can guess what's involved - at least for the bunny hop.

I've seen the controller billboards that show what you should do, but at the harder difficulty levels, they didn't help me very much.

Are those what you're referring to?
