How do I make a slowly falling elevator? I tried creating various kinds of brakes but the physics kept glitching out making the parts warp in the walls..

    Re: Elevator

I haven't tried yet, but intend to tackle slow up and down platforms to see what I can get done.

I think the best approach would be to extend a very long pole from the platform (perpendicular to the track line) and create a free rotating hinge about two thirds of its length out, attached to a wall or something heavy and solid. At the end of the bar I would put heavy objects, with the idea of using just enough weight to make the platform rise or fall when the bike is on it. Think of it as a giant see-saw.

    It might work.

    Re: Elevator

What I would do for an upward lift would make a rope out of small objects using multiple hinges (reinforced plywood should be good). Attach one end of the rope to the object you want lifting upward. Then make it so the 'rope' is looping over an object (such as a log) at the other end, then attach that end to a nice big counterweight.

Then place a breakable object underneath the counterweight, which can be broken when triggered, causing the counterweight to drop.

Can't see why it wouldn't work, but something will probably go wrong with it. It could work for an elevator moving downward too, just make the counterweight so active all the time and have it 'balance' with the elevator, so it drops slowly when someone goes into the elevator.

I've drawn a little diagram but I can't post links yet.

My idea for a lever didn't go terribly well this evening. Very unpredictable, and too difficult to make it move smoothly. Giving it up for now, since I don't really need it yet.

I did manage to make a working hamster wheel out of steel plates, though!

    Re: Elevator

I tried making an elevator with a long chain of wooden boards looped over a large tire. For some reason, no matter heavy I made the counterweight, it would always just get pulled upward by the elevator car on the other end.

    Re: Elevator

I am really new to the editor and it seems very complex, but if the elevator goes up before you get to it, maybe it needs a trigger that is linked to the counter weight?
