There is a game that got some attention recently since a port of it is coming to the Wiiware. The game is called La-Mulana, and it is a open world 2D exploration action/adventure (the genre is often called "MetroidVania")

The game is incredibly deep, and REALLY tough, it has old school MSX style graphics (crappy on purpose) It is a game that is not for everybody, but the hardcore retro gamers will find it to be a masterpiece. It involves lots of clever puzzles to solve and deadly traps. You'll love this game or you'll hate it

(This is a game where you'll probably need a walkthough BADLY, it is HARDCORE)

The PC game is free, and the english patch is rather hard to find (The original game is in Japanese) so here's a download link, I bundled the game with the english patch and some helpful documentation.
