    v1.09 update discussion

    Copied from Trials HD forums:

I was tinkering with Sipe to find some way to release the v1.09 update for Trials 2 SE, but there are very complicated issues in the patching process. Just before Christmas Trials 2 SE was released for box sales around europe (4 different versions): Finland, Germany, Russia, Spain & France. All these versions are packed with the tools made by the publishers of those versions and our patching system does not work properly with these versions. At least French & Spanish and Russian box versions will stop completely if we release a online automatic patch (Russian publisher seems to use Starforce to protect their versions - yuk!). This is a bad problem. We could however release the v1.09 patch only at our website without using the automatic system. This would not cause any problems (unless you have a Russian or French & Spanish box version of the game). Naturally this would not fix the wheelie exploit, as majority of the players would not patch the game to v1.09. Basically destroying the biggest fix in the patch.

I will keep you informed about the v1.09 when we further discuss the options. An automatic patch is pretty much out of the question, as we cannot just break the game for many of our customers, but a website downloadable patch to the non-steam version is at least very much possible.

    Note to everyone:

If you have bought the Steam version of the game, you can download the non-Steam demo version freely (http://www.redlynxtrials.com/MediaDownloads.action), and use your Trials 2 SE Steam serial number (found in the Windows registry) to unlock the full game for no extra charge. This way all the players who have purchased the Steam version could also patch to v1.09 rather easily.

This seems like the best route to proceed, as making the automatic patch for everyone would require us to recall all the box products (the publishers would never agree on this as it would be really expensive for them). But lets see how the vote proceeds first.

v1.09 has the wheelie exploit fix. But if we cannot force the update to all players, fixing the bug affects only a small minority of players who are willing to update manually to v1.09. In this case most of the players would continue to use v1.08 and still use the exploit. Trials 2 SE has four different box versions (sold in different European countries). These versions do not support automatic patching, and would likely cease to work if we forced a automatic patch to everyone (lose all server features and could not access track high scores anymore). This is a problem.

Quoted (Feb 26) from the v1.09 patch thread: "This patch contains only critical code fixes. If we implement anything new, there is always chance that we make new critical bugs and have to patch the game again"

Full list of v1.09 improvements. Most are text issues or minor bugs occurring on some computer configurations:

Forced auto-updating seems the most logical choice, but i didn't know about the boxed versions. That is a problem indeed. Put a downloadable version maybe and make the game check the version at the beginning? And if it doesn't match with 1.09, advice the player to download/install the patch or the game won't start (alternative, it will start, but won't use an online profile - but i guess that will require more work).
