Radeon 4870x2 running hot and very loud fan. [SOLVED]
Hi all
I have a problem playing Trials 2 SE 1.08 with Radeon 4870x2.
When i'm starting to play my display adapter puts the fan to 58% and temperature is over 80 celsuis. Is this normal?
For an examble, when playing Half-Life 2 or Bioshock. The fan never gets that loud or display adapter is not running that hot.
Spec:
Vista x64 Sp1
Radeon 4870x2 with latest drivers
Creative PCI-E X-FI Titanium soundcard with latest drivers
Asus Rampage Formula with latest BIOS
E8500 @ 3.16Ghz
4Gb of ram @ 1066Mhz

Trials 2 Second Edition is an unusual game, as it uses the GPU a lot more than any other game. What you experience is perfectly normal, I get the same thing with my HD4850. 80*C is fine for a 4870X2, but anything above 105 and you should be worried.

Yes, this is normal. Trials 2 is completely GPU bound. Most other games do not use 100% of your GPU power, and let the GPU have more idle cycles. This is mainly because Trials 2 does not stress your CPU at all (the GPU never is waiting for the CPU) and the graphics engine is a high end deferred renderer (lots of complex pixel shaders and GPU memory bandwidth is used).
If you want to reduce the heat generation a lot, I recommend enabling vertical sync (wait for vertical refresh) from your ATI Catalyst Control Center. This should also make the frame rate slightly smoother (according to many players having SLI/Crossfire setups).
