    Hang on startup (4GB mem + Vista 64 bit X-Fi ...) [SOLVED]

    Hi,

I'm having trouble starting up the game. I get a white screen and then basically the process just hangs indefinitely. I have to close it with the task manager.

Nothing is logged in the Application event log other than the fact that Windows had to close a process that wasn't responding. I've tried running the game in XP compatibility mode, but it caused the same "hanging".

    Specs:
Asus P5K Premium (Intel P35 chipset)
    4GB RAM
    en-us Windows Vista 64-bit
8800GTX with latest Vista 64 driver
Sound Blaster X-Fi with latest Vista 64 driver

What can I try to get any kind of error description or logging?

I don't know if this helps:

Try deleting the application data directory. In Windows Vista, the directory is

    C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Redlynx\Trials 2 SE\1.0\

where USERNAME is your Windows username.

Create X-Fi drivers has a known hang bug with 4GB of memory in Vista 64 bit and in OpenAL games (it's listed in Creative known issues list on their website). Trials 2 Second Edition uses OpenAL for sounds, so you might be having this problem. New X-Fi drivers were released last week. Those might fix this problem.

Delting the data directory didn't do anything (other than I had to register again )

This is the version that I downloaded and installed:

Ironically, they write that the 4GB bug should be fixed. I'll try to reinstall the Creative driver.

You could test by disabling the X-Fi hardware device from your control panel. Also version 1.06 will have a option to disable hardware audio acceleration in the game. It will be released next monday. So you might want to wait for that release and then try if it helps.

Yup, it's confirmed to have something to do with my sound card. It works when I disable it, but Creative must still have problems even though they state that they've fixed the 4GB bug in the newest driver.

The game's not much fun without sound though, so I guess I'll have to wait

Or you can try launch the game with software audios by adding
parameter -forcesoftwareaudio to your shortcut. (right click shortcut -> properties -> target:

    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Trials 2 Second Edition\trials2.exe" -forcesoftwareaudio

I've just tried the -forcesoftwareaudio switch. It doesn't do anything.. it still hangs.

Only thing that works is to disable my sound card.

The sounds are good, but I actually prefer them off when I drive. Listen to some good music instead
