    Level editor discussion and speculation

This topic is dedicated for discussion and speculation about the level editor.

We do not have currently planned any time table of the editor launch, and it's still entirely possible that the level editor will never be released for Trials 2 SE.

However Trials 2 SE has removed many obstacles present in the original Trials 2 level editor. Trials 2 SE is able to automatically identify and load all level data packs copied to the game directory, the new server supports new levels and automatically generates new global high score tables to them and the high score and replay logic is now completely cheatproof (you cannot cheat anymore by editing levels). These were the most important limitations in original Trials 2 concerning the level editor release.

We now have our Trials 2 boards, and we could easily dedicate a subforum for the level editor. There could be a FAQ, getting started thread, help/tips thread among others to help people getting started with the level editor. And links to new levels could be posted to the boards. This is of course all speculation right now. The editor is still not ready for launch, and would require weeks of work even if we only wanted to create a unsupported launch for the hardcore mod fans.

Don't expect any editor news soon. Now all our attention is in Trials 2 SE launch, the website launch and the web shop launch. After the launch we still have lots of things to do, like spreading the demo version around the net, and trying to get gaming magazines interested in reviewing Trials 2 SE. And we don't know how much growing pains the game server is going to have either. With the current 39 levels and new levels levels launching though the automatic upgrade feature, we are sure there is enough playable content in the game for several months.

There are many developers in our team who really want to see the editor launched sometime in the future. We are hardcore gamers too, and it would be very interesting to see what kind of crazy level ideas the community brings up.

    [UPDATE]

The level editor is not going to be released for Trials 2 Second Edition. It's just a too big task to bring the editor to the quality standards needed for a commercial product in the time schedule allocated for future Trials 2 patches. However we all agree that level editor is a important feature in the future of Trials series. It's very likely that the next Trials game will have a fully integrated easy to use level editor available from the day one.

The problem is that if we ask money for the product, then most customers demand a fully supported and tested release with good user interface with good manuals. We can't really do that, as it would require months of work to finetune the editor for the quality standards most professionals demand. However, if we release it for free, we can make the release unsupported, and just provide a simple FAQ and guide in the boards (and let the fans write their own more detailed guides). That way the amount of work needed would be much more manageable for our team. Just my opinions of course, nothing official.

Why dont i test your editor and see what needs to be updated/ changed for a public release then you get a free test bunny.

If I had a level editor for trials 2 I would go nuts!

I had an idea, It may be totally stupid, you tell me.

Make a level editor with ABSOLUTELY NOTHING but the bike and rider. You get an empty white level, you just draw with crappy editor like paint and play it. Trials 2: Line Rider edition. LMAO

I really hope you will be able to release it, because that would make this game so much deeper. One thing that will happen if you do, is that we will see some extremely hard levels. They will be so hard that you probably wouldn't release them if it was you that had made them

That was one of the better things with ELMA in my opinion, so many people making really hard maps that took forever to beat

It would also make it "easy" to arrange independent competitions, at lan partys and so on.

I would also pay for it, even if it is hard to use.

I agree with all points both of you QcChopper and Zakor made. The level editor would boost the community to a whole different level, and greatly improve the game replay value in long run. It would also surely improve the game sales, so the slight work we need to do to improve the editor usability surely provides more profit than loss for the company. However right now is not the proper time, as we need to first get the Trials 2 SE launch completed and past all the likely growing pains immediately following the release.

I pretty much expect us to test the automatic level distribution system by providing at least one extra level pack before we start looking at the level editor possibilities.

I would be very interested indeed in the Level Editor, as it would certainly help the Trials 2 community grow and raise awareness of the game. It would also let us all share levels we had made with each other and at the same time keep the game fresh, as you wouldn't be going over the same levels all the time.
