I generally don't like linking to IGN, because they're not the best reporters, but there it is -- for what it's worth.
A few interesting quotes.
"Not only do you actually have to go out and look for food and water, but [they] become very valuable and rare resources that can be used to trade and stuff like that, but when it comes to having to drink water and eat food to be able to survive, that's not really what we want from it. Food and water will be a very important part of the game, but players will not need to eat and drink to stay alive."
"Moving throughout the world, it's going to be a lot about looting and acquiring new gear as you progress. We're focusing a lot on the RPG aspects of the game since we are very much an RPG, so acquiring loot and gearing up your character is going to be a very big part of the game."
"The way you navigate and move through the city or a game that is open in nature, it's very core to how you experience the world. We are currently investigating what is the best for our game, what can we do to give you the best experience as a player because that is, in the end, what's most important to us."
It's nice to know that at least we'll have more of a bartering system then a monetary one. Food and water should be more important then a few pieces of paper with our Presidents on them in times like this.
Perhaps they could do a "Hardcore Mode" where food and water are used to survive. I would definitely play that game mode coming from the DayZ group.

Fallout: New Vegas has a Hardcore mode where you need to eat, sleep and drink, and everything has weight - particularly ammunition. - suddenly that rocket launcher is looking mighty cumbersome - moreso when rockets are 2.lbs a piece.
Even on the hardcore mode, you'd have to actively work at killing yourself from dehydration, starvation or sleep deprivation, the time-effects for how the lack-of-such was not very realistic.
Radiation in that game was the real killer [aside from enemy critters/NPCs]. You're wandering the Nevada friggin' desert..dehydration should come into play more quickly.
Now this.. The Division being based in New York, this is different. Hundreds of thousands [if not a couple million] stores that are looted, waiting to be looted, and /or defended by shopkeepers.
Full of perishable and non-perishable supplies and other things that could be useful.
!!BUT!!
To me, there's no point in needing food & water [for anything but quest-specific mechanics] unless you as the player need to use it for your own survival, with bartering and such being put on top of the survival requirement. Let's face it.. if these guys are highly-trained personnel from you-name-it alphabet-soup groups, they'll need to fuel their warmachines[bodies] to keep up the fight.
More than just stitching closed bullet holes and setting broken limbs, they'll need to fuel their bodies. Sure, we can assume they'll be trained to be able to subsist on their own sweat and skin-flakes just to stay alive.. but to carry out their missions? Come on now, they need food and water.
To think that I and a couple squaddies, or you and a small team, could navigate - ON FOOT - a panicked, breaking world from say, northern Manhattan to southern Queens without needing a drink or a meal, sure, it's possible, but not likely, especially if you're running/jogging most of the way.
So please, no food/water unless everyone needs it - especially the players.
But what if you have none and your character is starving?
Got a squadmate with an extra twinkie or banana? Call in a supply request, then bust your *** to get to it before everyone else, or go looting/scavenging.
Just my thoughts on the whole food/water thing.
Yeah radiation was it but that's my point exactly was you have to try to die from it in hardcore mode. When I say hardcore mode I mean hardcore mode. I really want an actual hardcore mode. Perhaps make it different servers so it's a different game mode all together (that way no regular players will go against hard core mode players). Make it a lot more challenging and at the same time more rewarding because of the increased difficulty.
Never played that game so I can't say for sure but it sounds very interesting yes. I mean I would love something like that but people would not enjoy the game as much as me. I would love to see a game that gives you a total ammo count, sleep, water, and food deprivation stats, along with weather potentially. Something where while trying to rebuild new york I need to realize that I also have to survive and attempt to thrive in my environment. I want to feel like I must adapt from when I started playing. Hardcore modes can bring that. Though this game looks amazing regardless and if it's gameplay lives up to the trailer I will be more than satisfied without a hardcore mode.Originally Posted by SeirX Go to original post
Actually, Hardcore servers would be quite appealing to me personally. I usually don't roll hardcore mode in games, well not till recently at least, but having a couple or a few hardcore servers would be very interesting. Although establishing a clan/guild/whatever they'll call it would be difficult with the whole 1 life thing. But I'm sure if they were to put in hardcore servers they'd figure that out.Originally Posted by TheDivsionFan Go to original post
On the food/water subject - I actually would like to see food and water play a good role in survival. In the Stalker series, with mods, food is a major part of the daily stalker life, not sure of any mods that include water. I say with mods because, iirc, food is minor in vanilla stalker games even on the hardest mode, most mods turn it into a more needed aspect of the game. I will be slightly disappointed if food and water will be just some minor buffs, but it probably wont prevent me from playing.
Side note: I'd like to know how player looting is going to work, if it'll be in the game.
Side, side note: Player quests. Boom. Players need water/food/medkit or some other in-demand survival item? Send out a distress signal alerting other players within the vicinity that you're in need of said item and are willing to reward them for it. Players opting in and players sending out the quest(s) cannot kill or be killed. The quest giving player cannot move from the spot in which they send out the signal, nor can they be killed or kill for 30-45seconds after quest has been completed by another player. I would say neither can any quest giver/completer's group members, but I think some ambush scenarios would be very interesting. Just something random I thought of. I'm sure someone will find a million flaws or some reason why it should never be in the game, but it would be interesting non-the-less.
Yeah, the whole 1 life thing could be something I could live without, perhaps a limited number of lives every 24 hours maybe 3-4? That way there is a good steep learning curve. I mean I would love the whole 1 life thing but if massive wants to do micro transactions (which with how they talk about the game and how long they want it to go IMO micro transactions will almost certainly be in game) only having 1 life would be rather counter intuitive. I personally wouldn't purchase any sort of items if I knew at any moment I may have to restart. So I would love a hardcore mode and as far as lives go I am not sure if it should be limited or not.Originally Posted by Pipske Go to original post
