    Hello guys,
I figured out that the UbisoftGameLauncher.exe is causing this problem. Here is a workaround that also keeps you saved games.

The procedure at the beginning is the same as I posted above
    1) go to the following directory C:\Program Files (x86)\Ubisoft\ and delete the folder Ubisoft Game Launcher.
    2) go to this director YOUR_STEAM_FOLDER\SteamApps\common\Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Blacklist\Support\Uplay
    3) run the UplayInstaller.exe
    4) NOTE!!! THIS IS NEW!!!! go to the following directory C:\Program Files (x86)\Ubisoft\Ubisoft Game Launcher and make a copy of UbisoftGameLauncher.exe
always keep this copy because you will need everytime you start the game (see 7)
    4) run the game over steam
    5) login into with your account data and wait for the uplay update
    6) you should be in the uplay application, run the game

Now comes the "workaround" when you want to play the game the next time.
    7) go to the following directory C:\Program Files (x86)\Ubisoft\Ubisoft Game Launcher and delete UbisoftGameLauncher.exe
    8) copy your copy of UbisoftGameLauncher.exe you made in 4
    9) rename a copy to UbisoftGameLauncher.exe
    10) run the game, for example by your desktop shortcut that steam created
11)you will see that uplay makes a little update (thats the UbisoftGameLauncher.exe)

The important thing is, that you now can use your saved games!!

    kind regards,
    lobbel

It worked for me. I used RevoUninstaller free to clean for file and registry leftovers. No need to reset HOSTS file.

    Still broken

Got the same issue when installing the game at another PC. Luckily I didn't have this issue on my home PC though...

    I do want to make this request to Ubisoft;

Please, please, please, ditch the Uplay launcher/platform. I chose Steam to buy this game with, please do not annoy me with a buggy launcher. You can leave that to Bioware/Origin.

I did a search on "uplay launcher crashing" which brought me here. I was trying to play Silent Hunter 5 and Uplay launcher kept crashing. No changes on my part that initiated this problem that I'm aware of.
I tied to start the game as administrator, and this time, the launcher went through and updated but then cashed again with a different error.

I tied again starting as admin and it started up Uplay without crashing. Closed it down and tried starting normally and it works, so I no longer have to launch as administrator.

My Silent Hunter 5 was not bought through Steam.
