I'd recommend just buying the Rocksmith 2014 guitar bundle. Good guitar and the game for $200. And you get a guitar strap and picks too.

Yeah. This is the way to go. You get basically the same guitar you linked and the game and everything else you'll need.

Electric is definitely the way to go for an absolute beginner.

If you love it and keep at it, pick up an acoustic somewhere down the road. It's great to be able to practice what you've picked up on electric on acoustic.

It has the 4.9 stars out of 72 reviews. What do you think about this for a person who has NEVER touched a guitar period?

Personally, I'd opt for a Squier by Fender Stratocaster for $50 on craigslist... you can find them on there all the time.

I bought this same guitar in solid black. It's a great starter guitar! I may help you in the game over the than the junior model that come in the Rocksmith pack - the Jr. has one pick-up & the special has 2 which sometimes helps the game detect certain notes/techniques like harmonics.

Just so you know, there are rhythm tracks with bends in them.

Yes, that should be good for a beginner. Epiphones are decent.

My first guitar was an EPI LP 100, which is very similar. I think it just had upgraded pickups. Anyway, I got it for $200 at a second-hand store, and it was a great player. Held a tune well, which is important for a beginner. There are a lot of entry level guitars with cheap tuners that will drive you crazy.

Everyone's advice so far has been great. I would recommend that you go to a music store or pawn shop and PICK UP the guitars and see how they feel in your hands. $180 is a cheap guitar, but that's a LOT of money for something that you've never played before. A Les Paul style guitar is going to be bottom heavy. If your right handed, most of the weight is going to be on your right hand side. Other guitars, like a Washburn Dimebag Stealth that I had, was more evenly weight distributed- but it was HUGE size wise. Not heavy, just HUGE. lol.

The other thing is wrap your hand around the neck and touch the frets. Some necks are thick and some aren't. If you have long fingers, this won't matter as much.

With Black Friday coming up, watch for sales to get you a steal on a "cheap" guitar. I picked up my 1st guitar, a $200 bronze series BC Rich Warlock, for $100 on a 50% off sale at Guitar Center eons ago. Good luck, dude.

Not really. The guitar in the bundle is an Epi LP Jr. with one pickup and a one piece non-adjustable compensated bridge, the one in the link is a LP Special II with two pickups with a 3-way pickup switch and a two-piece adjustable bridge.
    Close, but no cigar.

Whatever you get, make sure you get it set up properly. It makes all the difference. I would advise finding a local store that has something you like in your budget and getting them to carry out a set up before you take it home.
