    New ability revealed: Booby Trap

    Hello everyone,

Last week-end at PAX, we revealed a number of things about Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag Multiplayer. One of them was the new Booby Trap ability.

    What is Booby Trap?

It’s a trap! To be clearer, it’s an ability that can be used on doors, lifts, platforms or corner helpers (as known as “chasebreakers” in the game). Booby traps take a few moments to arm (just like tripwire bombs) and will explode and kill your opponents (pursuers and targets) if they trigger them.

Though small and rather difficult to notice, Booby traps are visible to all players in the form of a small white box, with the trapper also having an icon on top of the booby trap they placed. When you’re about to use a chasebreaker, better check around if you see that small white box or a twitching Animus effect, both indicators that a booby trap has been placed there.

It's one of the rare lethal abilities and, as such, will bear an appropriate cooldown.

The white box and twitched chasebreaker doors

    How to counter it?

Booby traps are only triggered when the chasebreakers are triggered. How do you trigger a chasebreaker? If you run. In other terms, if you notice a booby trap by a door and are careful to walk, you won’t trigger it. For lifts, corner helpers and platforms, you need to be free running to reach any of those, so careful with that.

So, check the chasebreakers before using them, walk instead of running, avoid them if you find out they’re trapped, use an Animus Shield, or even replace opponents’ Booby traps with your own! (However, note that you can only have one Booby Trap active at any given time.)

    A word from the designers

“We loved the intention behind the Closure ability. It’s basically a call to play with chasebreakers. Closure relies on chasebreakers but it’s also very conditional and requires good timing to be efficient. This explains why Closure was not as popular as we expected it to be in Assassin’s Creed 3.

The idea with Booby trap was to create a good alternative to Closure. Booby traps are less conditional, less timed, easier to read and more efficient.

The conclusion was to base it on only one Chasebreaker, with only one possible state (trapped or not trapped), and to make it lethal.

We hope the ability will be handy and fun to play with. It should change the dynamic of the game slightly, making players a little more cautious with chasebreakers while bringing an interesting twist to team modes particularly.”

So does this ability affect all players or only your assigned target/pursuer? In team modes I can imagine it would affect everyone on the opposing team, but what about in FFA modes?

Wow. Another annoying no skill 100 point kill ability. Gun wasn't enough?

Really? Do you mean in Wanted? Or Deathmatch? If the ability just gives you 100 points, i won't be worth it to use it in these modes.
I can already see Booby Trap making Artifact Assault attack even harder.

It affects everyone but your team mates in team modes (not specifically your target/pursuers)

Okay sorry, i didn't realize. But still it'll make it even harder for runners. I know that AA can't be unbalanced in some way, because every team is both defending and attacking, but the balance between attacking and defending must be there too.
So it affects also other players. This is really something bad. Nobody gets an advantage of it like this, it's just annoying. Same goes for the minor hack.

And in FFA modes like Deathmatch or Wanted? If you set a trap for your pursuer but another player happens to run through it, do they get killed?

This is interesting even though I think closure should stay along. And speaking about new abilities, they should make an ability called "Technical Difficulties", this one will work even better than smoke bombs, considering how effective the "Network is experiencing technical difficulties" error/message have been. :P
