I've encountered a couple of bad guys and even animals like leopards, bears and tigers. Everytime I get in a scrap with one of them, the screen pops up the familiar MASH button. I think I must be doing it wrong. Normally I just start hitting the Space Bar (mash for me) very rapidly, but I get my *** kicked most times in these situations and it takes m e several attempts to do it right. In particular now that I've taken over the ship in Piece of the Past, I'm sort of stuck when I have to try and pass the bad guy hiding in the water below and the attack animation kicks in, I'm dying continually to this guy, I've tried several times with no success, so I know that I am doing something wrong.
So should I just press and hold my MASH button or should I pound the hell out of it, to make a successful kill?
Thanks for your time and any advice you may offer.
(I swear I have a love hate relationship with Far Cry 3)
Hi Prozac1964
yeah, ya know it's been a very frustrating experience for just about all of us. If I'm going to say anything negative about this game, this is the point I where I do it. Often this wasn't fun, or funny. I'm sure the Dev's all sat around discussing this at some point and decided this is what they needed to do to further the insanity theme. I've played though this game now several times and have never found any real pattern to it. I can tell you that too slow and too fast do not work. What worked more often then not for me was between a medium to fast key press. Somewhere between half second presses. If I were to describe it, I'd say about as fast as you would normally knock on a door .. .only keep knocking. Hope that helps.
Stockdale50, that gave me a real belly laugh reading about someone besides me has struggled with this game. LOL Anyhow, thanks for your advice I'm going to give it a try. I was ready to throw the game in the garbage, I was furious that I could not get past this one guy. So I took a couple of days off to educate myself and now I'm going to jump into the insanity again.Originally Posted by Stockdale50 Go to original post![]()
You didn't mention the specific keys, so the easiest thing to say is "Mash" applies to several keys, and in the case of the under water pirate, (2) keys are required. I believe (read the prompt in the game, don't trust my memory) you mash "C" first, then you have to mash "E" to kick him to finish him off.
For most of the animal encounters I believe the key is "C", but all this really does is give you a second or two to get your act together. In these cases I mash "C", the wildy slash with the "E", and every now and then I manage to take the animal out, but most times I'm toast.
I'm kind of torn on the mechanics (mashing, different button different times, etc.) of these mini-battles, but if you follow the prompts exactly, it really does go pretty smoothly. And that the part that bothers me. If Jason is learning all these skills, the means to use each weapon and technique should have been taught during the instructional part to the point to where the actions are normal, and don't need the silly prompts at all.

This button pushing business is just a means to an end. It's the result of porting a game to PC that was designed for consoles. There are three actions, "Hold" "Mash (flashing)" and sequential button "Pushing" The definition of Mash is to beat to a pulp as in Mashed Potatoes. The fact that when you are told to "Mash" you notice that the word flashes, suggesting you spam the key. It would give you the impression that you are to spam the key very hard like it's pressure sensitive. I've not found that to be the case with regard to a PC keyboard but maybe ??? it would make sense if one was using a controller on a console.
In any case ... to mash is to spam the key. Any Moderator care to have a Dev clarify this as it's been a topic of discussion several times.
Hey Prozac1964 ... NEVER give up .. NEVER let anyone or anything stand in your way of progress. You may have a couple more obstacles in the way then others, but it will only make you stronger when you succeed. Millions have played this game and won. If they can do it, you certainly can. The rewards in terms of self esteem and gratification far FAR exceed the agony of defeat with longer lasting euphoria from the victory. Trust me. Sometimes just stepping away for a short bit. Collect your thoughts, reward your efforts with some refreshments and jump back in again with a different attitude is all one needs to do.
So true. This has saved me in lots of games. Always amazing how suddenly I've managed something I couldn't for the life of me do before.Originally Posted by Stockdale50 Go to original post

Well, not only do I play on PC, I play with the unconventional movement keys of ESDF. Always have. It just help me stay in the right position since my index finger can always feel the ridge on the F (home) key, and crouch is always V. And G is always my "use" key for doing things like skinning animals and getting in vehicles. The underwater pirate was three keys for me: Space bar, then V, and finally G for the final kicks.

Thanks for the encouragement for sure, because I actually had given up - flat out quit. But I have a pattern of always coming back around. And funny that you should say: "NEVER give up" because this is exactly what my mom was famous for saying. She taught it to me my whole life, that is my greatest memory of her, and ultimately that's the reason why I came back the game. I agree 100% with everything you said. Thanks again.

+1 I've done this probably 100 times in the various video games I've played. I hit a wall, and I really can't overcome the obstacle at the moment. But I walk away for a couple of days, come back, and just crush it!
So I have awesome news: I DID IT! I came back with a new attitude and on my second attempt I destroyed that ambushing bastard. And as I surfaced to the top of ocean water, I felt so incredible. The gratification that comes from a victory that is greater by far on a personal level than even the game itself, is incredible. A feeling that is hard to match!
Thanks again to everyone for your encouragement. I'm so glad I didn't give up!
Prozac
Awesome Prozac!! ... your mother sounds like a wise woman. If memory serves me, you only mash the first button with the guy, then click on the second button to kick him. But you know .. if mashing the second button works .. that's great too. Listen, this will not be your only frustrating moment. There are two other moments yet to come where you'll be face with the same scenario. One with Jason pushing a jeep, and the other where Jason is under water. The one with Jason under water almost did me in, not because it was difficult, but because I got tired of Vas repeating him self .. over and over and over again, as I failed. Eventually .. I took my own advice and walked away, came back a few minutes later and nailed it.
Happy Gaming!
Thanks, Stocksdale. I am a happy gamer now! I just had to step away. Now I know how to handle frustrating gaming situations.Originally Posted by Stockdale50 Go to original post![]()
