The hood is only iconic because Ezio had a hood in AC2 (as a homage to Altaïr). If they'd have given Ezio regular Italian noblemen's clothes, nobody would be complaining about the hood now.
Yes. But that doesn't change the fact that it became iconic. Just as the hidden blade did too, btw.

It's like saying, 'Oh, if they wouldn't have put lightsabers in the second Star Wars movie, nobody would care', or something like that. Not the best mock example, but, you get the idea.

The hood should only be used in time periods where it makes sense. It made sense for Desmond because hoodies are a popular clothing item in our time. If Desmond was the only person walking around in a white hood in an era when nobody else wears one, he would stick out like a sore thumb. Connor looked really out of place in his time and so does Edward.

I might even be more okay with the hood if it didn't always have to be glaring white. Ezio's standard outfit in ACR was good. In AC3, I always dressed Connor up in brown robes so he could pass for a huntsman from the forest.
It doesn't have to be white. As you said, ACR's outfit was fine, and we've had the option to dye them ever since AC2. And the supporting Assassins don't have to wear it; in fact, I'd rather they didn't, so it doesn't seem like you have an Assassin army complete with uniforms. But yes, the hood should be the default outfit. It bothered me that it wasn't in Liberation. If you want to take it down or wear a more period-appropriate outfit, that option should be there too. But the hood needs to stay.

The only thing I disagree is with the hood. Now, yes, it's iconic because of Ezio but, I think they should keep it. It's not even because I like the hood, either. I HAAAATE how much the assassin stands out in the games. In AC3, it was just stupid. The easiest way to fix this is to make an "outfit" that is given for free(meaning everyone starts out with it) that is made specifically to match the time period. That way, people who want to actually be "incognito", including me, can. ?

I'd say the hidden blade had more potential as a series icon than the hood because it was a unique and cool weapon. Lightsabres didn't remain part of SW purely for their iconic imagery, they stayed because they made sense within the universe and were essential to the Jedi order. Hoods are not essential to the assassins. The hidden blade is because it encompasses everything they represent: easy to conceal, deadly, silent and easy to carry with you at all times.

If the assassin order decreed that all assassins MUST wear hoods so that their brothers may recognize them (like Jedi robes), then it would be okay (although still unrealistic). But the truth is, Altaïr's Codex urges future assassins to abandon the old ways if it means exposing the brotherhood to more danger. White hoods are way too obvious, especially when there are Templars around who know what to look for. If the assassins were smart, they would abandon the hooded robes. There's only so far I can suspend my disbelief. When everyone else is wearing sailor clothes and pirate hats and Edward is the only one who wears a white hood - especially in the middle of a fight where a hood would block your vision and be easy to grab hold of - it just feels out-of-place. Aveline's design IMO is the most innovative design the series has had for a main character since AC1. You instantly recognize her as an assassin even without the hood due to the shape of her hat, the red sash and the hidden blade.

I agree with this, except I would turn it around. Make the hooded outfit the special unlockable outfit and make every other outfit the "incognito" kind. That way players who want to keep walking around in traditional assassin robes can do that, but it won't be the main outfit. That would allow for some more creative freedom for the character designers as well, allowing them to come up with assassin designs that don't necessarily have to adhere to the same basic rules all the time.
