AMSTERDAMNED - Custom map based on Amsterdam, The Netherlands

    Hello peeps!

I took your comments about Metropolis looking dull and grey very seriously and decided to start making a custom map based around my home town: Amsterdam, The Netherlands. This map may turn out to be either singleplayer or multiplayer (or both). At this point I am open to suggestions on layout, custom models and features.

    UPDATE 1:

Sidenote: I made the video longer to allow for a 'custom' thumbnail.

Wow! Mauro Robert, Shortbull NL, True Survival, Razor and me are all from the Netherworld... ehhh Netherlands. Anyway. I love the idea of doing a Amsterdam map and ive been thinking about one myself for a long time. You asked for some feedback and tips so here goes... Amsterdam is known for its... Canals and Dutch Baroque style houses. (And more...but that later) To have a cool playing map i would suggest to have a layout like this map Civil Unrest NYC i made long ago for Farcry2

Basically its a roundabout with a central structure in the middle, providing cover for snipers from across the map. Now imagine those pictures with waterways instead of the street surface. The centre building should be fully 3D and preferably entrable from at least 2 entry points. What would be especially cool is a route that goes up the building rooftop as well. Giving the map a classic King-of-the-hill element.
    Building entry point.

    Elevator.

Amsterdam is also kown for its Diamond market, Red Light District, (Ksmic Rush Stripper FC2) You could create something like this using the xenon lights

Small bridges, Mariuana, Tourist boats. Musea etc.

but one thing. I think those matrasses as a street surface is inspired. but is not gonna work. you wont have any points for the actual map. And all those lovely custom cars you made etc, And whats the point? There is a actual cobblestone texture on the editor and your now able to make bridges that continue with the texture thanks to the hole tool. Imagine how those nice curved bridges can be made... All you have to do Place a nice platform on the canal sides for the streets and create custom bridge sides for the bridges. The Platform i would use is the "Concrete support " under "bridges" Its very cheap and it looks spot on for Amsterdam canal sides

I made a quick example to show what i mean with the textures and platforms. Here i ve put 2 objects together at a 90 or so degree angle and fused the hollow bottoms together (The editor gives the object standing up so you have to tilt it) The platforms are so cheap that you have enough points go crazy on the building facades and custom vehicles Good luck!

Thanks for all the feedback man! Yes there's a lot of Dutch mappers around! It's gonna take me some time to respond to everything you explained but here it goes...

The red light district would be a nice one! I also think I will add a part of the Vondelpark. Leidse and/or Rembrandt square will be a toughy. I'm not going into the Dam/Munt/Centraal Station area it would take far too much time to realistically portray those areas.

So yeah the canals play a big part! They also allow me to create a lot of natural borders without having to barricade roads like you see in 90% of all videogames.

The mattresses do work. First of all I'm on pc so object count is not a big problem as long as the framerate is around 40fps or more. The cobble stone texture looks nothing like the ones you find in Amsterdam. They aren't used in most areas but the Dam for example still has them:

So this way it simply looks a lot better

Your map layout is quite similar to Metropolis, which also has a circular layout. This is going to be singleplayer though. The multiplayer is dead.

I'm using the support a lot in my maps it has a great dd! Using some big gates right now, might switch them out

I am loving the look of this! The mattresses look great as roads in my opinion, as long as they don't drop frame rate you will be fine using them. I could see many opportunities for different types of maps to create in the way which you have done with this map.

Great work and I cannot wait to see more!
