With the game being online only, what happens when the game has no active servers?

Several people at Amazon's VGF(Video Game Forums) are questioning whether the game will become obsolete and unplayable in a few years due to being an online game only. Are there any others who are concerned about this and can we please get some type of confirmation that the game will be playable long after any online servers are brought down? If anyone else is concerned about this, post your thoughts below. To any mod or Ubi rep who responds, thank you for any light that you can shine on this possibility.

Odds are the game will be the same as any MMO. When the game is no longer profitable for Ubisoft they will pull the plug. Now depending on whether they have microtransactions or not the game's life could vary immensely. If there are no MTs, the game will die when sales of the game die down to a level that can't support the cost of servers/bandwidth/customer service representatives/etc. Paid DLC would extend the life in this case, but it would depend on the quality of the DLC and whether players actually buy it.

If on the other hand they go the microtransaction route, it will depend on the quality of the items they put on the store. MMO players in North America are slowly adjusting to the idea of MT, so if they put up a lot of fluff items (clothing items, weapon customizations, items with no gameplay impact, etc) the game could easily last 5-10 years. By then though, technology will have advanced to the point that the graphics will be mediocre and the gameplay considered sub-standard.

Either way, I don't see the game being playable beyond the 10 year mark. Between now and then, it's entirely possible that if enough players demand it, a way to play the game offline, or possibly even allowing players to host their own servers, will be made to allow Ubisoft to hand the game off to the players entirely without the major hate that NCsoft has gotten from shutting down City of Heroes.

Thanks, much of that is what I thought as well. I hate the idea of a game that I purchase for a single-player experience will be held up to ransom of finances, but I accept that it's inevitable at some points. Still very excited by this title. I generally dislike shooters, as I am deplorable at TPS's, but I'm more than willing to give this one a shot.
