Don't want to waste your time, but install prob stopping me

    Hi Everyone,
I realize the IL-2 1946 Win 7 issues have been well documented, and I have read through all. I have seen workarounds for install of the DVD, OpenGL vs DirectX thoughts, TAGES driver and SecuRom issues on launching gameplay. After 2 days, I can't get the game to install on my new Win 7 64-bit desktop. I have:

tried the a.exe file as admin
tried copying dvd contents to non Windows program file folder (can't do due to inability to read several parts of the DVD ie. DirectX9c folder .dll components, part of the Data II cabinet file, and the installer file- the other files/folders copy fine)
    tried the compatibility troubleshooter
get the same issue when trying to install from all angles: It asks for language, Win Installer starts, goes thru "configuring" stage, hits next stage and I get an error message "1628- Failed to complete Installation"

I don't know how people are getting it to install using the a. file as an admin....not working for me. I assume it might be SecuRom causing reading problems on DVD (I thk it is the Euro edition), but the diagnostic tool won't work on the file on DVD, and can't get the files to hard drive.... Any other updated fixes on an install that won't work based on what I have seen on this/MS sites?
    Thanks

Sounds like a dodgy disk or your optical drive is failing to read some of the files on the disk. If you have another computer with a DVD player handy or an external DVD player, you could try installing with the disk in one of those. If it fails there too, chances are the disk is dodgy. If it succeeds, it sounds like the optical drive on your computer may be very slightly out of alignment.

If the dodgy disk seems like the culprit, take it back and exchange it.
If it installs on another computer, you can just copy the entire installation to your machine. There are no vital registry entries, you'll only need to run the game configuration utility in the game folder (setup.exe for US edition, il2setup.exe for "rest of the world" edition) to choose the correct sound/video hardware settings for your machine before you run the game.

I had a bad OD that drove me nuts for hours.. every time I installed my OS it would leave out something.. If it turns out to be the OD and you get it on another PC with the huge sizes of thumbdrives now you can copy the whole thing to a backup thumb drive and just move it over when needed.

Do as Bearcat and Tully posted.

    For the US Retail version:

    Copy the /
IL-2 Sturmovik 1946/ folder over to the other machine and place it under c:/Games/ (create that folder yourself), then run il2set.exe to configure IL-2 to the new hardware.
Create new shortcut(s) to il2fb.exe to run the game and to il2set.exe to configure it

Apply all patches in sequence to c:/Games/IL-2 Sturmovik 1946/ folder.

For the International edition you will need a working Optical DVD drive, as SecuROM insists on the DVD in the drive to run IL-2. Thank goodness these drives cost next to nothing.

The procedure is the same as for the US Retail version. Only il2set.exe is called il2setup.exe in this version.

The US Retail version has a badge on the front of the amaray DVD holder displaying "5 Games in 1"

The contents of the US Retail version can be copied over to a flash memory card/stick for much faster install and is 64 bit compatible.
This version also does not need the DVD in the drive during play, so you can leave your DVD protected in it's package protecting your investment.

Well worth purchasing, even if you already own an international version.

Look on eBay if you can't find it in a shop online or near you. Plenty of new ones available.

    Good Luck!
