My squad is planning to run dedicated server.
Budget has been made by donation of some core members. What must be done now is purchasing dedicated server PC.
My thought : some decent SCSI HDD, 2.4c HT cpu, 512 ram etc.. of course connetion is via LAN.
Server setting might be GreaterGreen-like thou world and plane choice would differ.
I need advice from anyone with admin experience or knowledge.
We'd appreciate your words on spec priority, problems what you encountered, and more.
Thank you in advance.
Greater green web server down for long at this time.

Don't blow a lot of money on a dedicated DF machine unless you need the horsepower for other games. The dedicated server is very resource friendly.

The TX-OC3 runs on an single 1.7ghz proc, 7200rpm IDE with 512+256mb PC2700 RAM chips. The box is sitting on an OC3 connection which is effectively a shared 15mb.
The actual dedicated console machine really doesn't need a lot of horse power on it's own...the big thing is connection speed and careful mission design. Greater Green is not a great server just because they sit on a fast connection, they've been in business for a while and have things down really good for missions and planes sets among other things.
BaldieJR knows a lot about connection settings and how to minimize lag, I'm sure he'll post here. SPaRX who runs 3 dedicated servers also has good things to say about NetSpeed settings and mission design.
Hunter has a thread about packet rates depending on settings which has some interesting information in it.
Here is something I did on the DS setup back in the day when it first came out, this might be handy.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

No matter what setting you chose leave the external views on; It is beautiful to see the planes from outside especially F-3 and if you get shot down you can watch what is going on and enjoy the spectacle.
My favorite settings; Full hard, limited everything, icons off, cockpit on, but ext views on.
With views off, what is the point of having a 300 bucks video card.
good luck

Thank you, yes, it's not gaming machine. I got another decent one.
What we will run are FB Dedicated Server and FBDaemon only.
And please hold debate on difficulty setting.

VFC*HOST runs on XP2500 @2.2Ghz with 512MB PC3200. Connection speed is 10MB down, 1MB up and i haven`t heard any complaints. Usually i host for 21 ppl...sometimes for 25. Depending on the map and ammount of ground objects. It is capable of running probably up to 30 with ease...but...
There are couple things to consider... servers with large amount of ppl are all nice and everything...but for average user (meaning average connection and system) such a crowded DF`s with ground objects and FBD and stats running... might not be a friendly environment. And while broadband users powered by super rigs having a good time... some poor fellas might be struggling or even getting kicked every 10 minutes.
I use to run VFC*HOST on PIII 800 with 1gig of PC133 and it did just fine for 17 ppl. No complaints... so if you think about it...it doesn`t take supercomputer to run IL2FB dedicated server, but it takes common sense from the host on...what map, how many objects, how many users, shoud i use other software ...etc etc...
Just a few thoughts
V!

VFC*Crazyivan aka VFC*HOST
Kozhedub: In combat potential, the Yak-3, La-7 and La-9 fighters were indisputably superior to the Bf-109s and Fw-190s. But, as they say, no matter how good the violin may be, much depends on the violinist. I always felt respect for an enemy pilot whose plane I failed to down.

I would spend the money on CPU, RAM, and connection. A SCSI is not really necessary, as most of the HD loading is done during map changes, not gameplay (so you can save some cash there). If this server is used only for FB, then a 20-40 gig HD should be suffecient. When you buy the mobo, you should look for one that has a built in video card and lan card. If you go with a pentium chip, you should be able to fit it in a 1U server box, since those chips run cooler (and if it's going in a data center, space = money). If you want some more details, greatergreen.com should be propogated to the DNS server by tomorrow (or you can visit at 209.209.44.31). Good luck!
Thanks,
Sammie

A few good thoughts, thanks.
But what I'm concerned most now is which is better. 3200+ server and P3-800 server both were ok? Really same performance? Since we'll manage only one server for over 1 year until BOB comes out, we're just trying to get better one.
Divide and conquer, I will set up HW first and setup programs and find best settings. It will be faster way IMHO.
More specific.
P4 2.4c or 2.8c -> too much for just server? or P3 dual cpu would be better? (did saw on tech forum someone saying P3 dual was better) 2.4c, 2.8c, I think it might be too much for server. But if it has noticeable smoothness over P4 1.7, we'd definitely choose it.
512 DDR -> I think it's ok, but maybe not enough soon with DS and Daemon on?
10K rpm SCSI HDD -> performance is virtually same with common 7200rpm EIDE as a FB dedi server? no need for SCSI?
Anyway I'm studying with the link what you gave me. You're really good guys.
