Far Cry 3 is just way too Easy (even on the hardest setting)

I'm about 12-15 hours into the game, playing on Warrior difficulty, and while the game is a vast improvement in quality over Ubisoft's prior entries in the series, I feel like it's just too easy. I realize that Far Cry 1's difficulty was a bit on the extreme side, in the way the AI could shoot you down from a mile away like they're cyborgs with bionic vision and aiming (which I loved); I was never expecting FC3 to match FC1 in terms of hardcore, raw difficulty.

However, all that being said, I still feel FC3 is way under-par compared to the difficulty of most modern shooters--COD and Battlefield, to name some examples. Dishonored and Borderlands 2 are in many ways similar to FC3, and they're not extremely difficulty games, but even they offer a stiffer challenge overall. Syndicate and Darkness II, to name a couple more, were shooters released this year alone that outmatched FC3 in terms of difficulty level.

Sadly, Far Cry 3 is not 10% as hard as Far Cry 1, and not even half as hard as Far Cry 2 on its hardest setting! You can basically carry a ton of health syringes and green herbs, and heal yourself forever, and this is probably the biggest reason it's so easy. The enemies are also very easy to kill, and their aim isn't particularly good. Most of the time I run into a group of enemies, I don't even have to use a single health syringe! And I'm not even sniping, I'm just using an assault rifle from behind cover, and can easily kill off groups of enemies in a few seconds.

This game could really use a patch perhaps to balance the game out a bit for more of a challenge. For example, some things that could be patched:

    • Enforce strict limits on health syringes you can carry
    • Require 2 green herbs instead of just 1 to craft a health syringe, and also enforce strict limits on green herbs you can carry
    • Make enemy AI tougher--i.e., have better aim, and take more bullets to kill (doubling enemy health would be a good start)

As I said, I feel the game is very well made in many regards, but I feel like Ubisoft was too busy just finishing the game and polishing other aspects, but neglecting to balance the game's difficulty level. In its current form, it's pretty much a cakewalk for anyone who is moderately proficient at shooters. However, I still feel hopeful that the difficulty can be easily patched in a couple different ways (simple tweaks to enemy AI variables/damage would be enough) to be more of a challenge and thus more enjoyable.

    As an addendum:

Note to Ubisoft: I would definitely pay good money for some DLC expansion packs that add a "Hardcore" or "Realistic" difficulty mode to the game, similar to how Fallout 3 added a new Game-Plus+ mode with its "Broken Steel" expansion pack.

Thanks. This post was helpful. I wasn't sure how it would compare to the 1st Farcry and other shooters. Nice post!

try playing with mods and it might be more challenging

but in the end it all depends on your playstyle. if you want a challenge try playing bow only, or pistol and shotgun. these games are meant to scale based on user choice - new players will stick to the high-powered snipers and machine guns, but that doesn't mean you have to

I played pretty much bow only, with silence pistol for close encounters, still too easy. And this is coming from a not-so-brilliant gamer (I wept on my play through of Max Payne 3 on hard, never mind Old School . . . embarrassing). I do really hope they add a new game + and difficulty level. The trophies are lacking as well (no trophy for hard mode, though it's clear why now, and no incentive to really play the game through again right away, well, apart from it being rather brilliant that is). I look forward to any DLCs.

Play with a pistol only--no silencer.

Doesn't matter what weapon you're using; silencers and stealth kills make this game super easy.

I agree the game is too easy and causes you to miss out on all the little details of combat and the enemy AI and a greater difficulty level would be awesome.

I think purposefully penalizing yourself by choosing weaker weapons and avoiding certain objectives is the way to go, but it does effect the immersion of the game and the reward factor. Rather than getting a new gun as a much needed power up and reward, you are specifically not using it to make the battles more interesting which means you are still aware of the fact you can win any battle more easily if you allow yourself and you don't really need to learn or improve your skill and tactics involved with the game.

I will never ever buy a DLC for a game that makes up for something the game didn't initially have or just makes you stronger because you spent cash rather than play the game. (multiplayer Dinobots my ***!)

Actually most likely I will never purchase a DLC for a game ever unless something surprises me.

Warrior my ***. I took on 3 jeep things full of men at once with an AK with limited ammo. All I had to do is hide in a bush. Seriously??? I'm 1 hour in the game so I don't have armor, or anything! This is the PC VERSION, we have mice, which means we're far better aimers than pad people. Adapt!

there is a mod in the mods thread that make the SP much much harder

can't tag enemies, no more free weapons, price increases, animal icons gone relics items don't glow anymore etc.

i think it also increased the enemy's sniper range (can spot/shoot you from a further range) and power by a substantial amount, and the laser sight hint is removed

removing the crosshair and having to rely on iron sights and scope is another good idea to this "realism" difficulty

At the end of the day, this game was a console port and is a console designed game first and foremost to cater gamepad users, it will always be easier for keyboard/mice gamers. But the modding possibilities on the PC will bring more challenges, this company just needs to promote/endorse/help the community, open up the game and let the creativity flow.
