I had the same problem. An earlier comment said that his GamerProfile.xml document was empty. It turned out mine was as well and I knew it had some text in it before. Somehow the contents got deleted, not really sure how. I asked a friend of mine to send me what he had in his document and copied it into mine. The game then launched normally.
Steps to this possible fix:
- go to your Document folder in C:\Users\<YOUR USERNAME>\Documents\My games\Far Cry 3 and open GamerProfile.xml with notepad.
- paste in the following and save (You will probably have to change your in game settings to whatever you had them as before);

I've had this issue aswell.
I'm using Windows 8, and an ATI card, my game is the Steam version. Apparently it was somehow connected to the FRAPS running in the background. I've disabled it and I can start the game normally now.
It's a bugger having to start FRAPS after the game, but what can you do.
