Well, I just took the dogs out for the last time tonight at 9:34pm. The winds are astoundingly powerful. There's debris all over my yard, including some roof tiles. I don't think they're mine, they're too new and I couldn't see anything amiss when I used the flashlight to check my rooftop. My neighbor has some very large branches all over his front yard and his aluminum siding is beginning to strip away on one of his eaves. Rain started up again as I was bringing the dogs inside. And they say that this is going to last into tomorrow?!

Some of my fire dept friends are listenting to FDNY radio traffic and posting updates and some highlights on facebook. It sounds like the New York Brothers are having a busy night, by their standards.

Good to hear you are OK Wern - been watching CNN News - NJ coping quite a bit.
Been looking at the stats of the last big cyclone to hit here earlier in the year of 2011. YASI was a CAT 5 and caused a lot of damage in north Queensland and while the area is populated, it is not as populated as where it is hitting in the US east. Nevertheless the damage was around $US3.54billion.

So we here in OZ understand what you are going through and you have our support.

Just woke up and checked the news, seems pretty bad, maybe 5 million without power. Hope you're OK Wern, check in.

Here in NE Pennsylvania and we're OK. Lost power last night for less than a minute.
Sending up prayers for those folks on the coast and in NYC and everywhere else affected by this monster weather event.
@ Wernher,
I think, right now, worrying about a fence is the least of your worries.
Stay safe out there in the aftermath.

Glad to hear that everyone is ok. Looks like Sandy was really as bad as predicted.

Well, I woke up this morning and got a better perspective of the damage. Looks like some of those roof tiles were mine after all. Looks like I lost almost a dozen of them. I'll have to contact my insurance agent today and try to file a claim. And I'm not the only one. Looks like the homes all around me lost some. Roof tiles litter the street and neighboring yards. I couldn't believe how strong some of those wind gusts were last night and, even with past hurricanes of greater intensity, don't recall such powerful winds. At times, these gusts were sustained for several minutes. I had a vinyl bench on a patio in my yard, it ended up behind my garage. A small but heavy vinyl table seems to have scaled my 6' fence and is now upside-down in my neighbors yard. No flooding in my basement (thank God) though, I haven't been able to get into my attic spaces to see if the lost roof tiles caused any damage there.
There were no torrential downpours, though the rain was steady at times and wind driven. I looked at my satellite images just a few moments ago and it appears that the storm has stalled out over middle Penn. Seems to be just hovering in place there with very little northern movement. We're all OK here otherwise, don't have any injuries or know of any to the neighborhood. Gotta go now and start trying to get in touch with my agent.

Glad to hear you're okay and that you're house is intact. A few roof tiles and some furniture are easy to replace. Don't forget to check on your police and fire brothers. Make sure they're okay.

All is quiet here, did have some really strong winds though. Almost had my leg broken by a flying tree branch on the walk to school this morning. We had a little water in the basement but towels cleaned it up quickly. Glad to hear you folks are alright.
