I just updated my client and started a custom game. Im not noticing much is better. Few potraits to pick from, one magic, one might, same number of races, same boring weak specialized skills to pick from. I stopped playing the story mode because it was repetitive, easy, and boring (before I quit). Custom games will depend on the intelligence of the ai, and the interesting buildings or quests along the way.
I guess what Im saying is I stopped playing around version 1.4. And I just remembered I had this game.
Can anyone tell me how the game is improved (if you did not like the game at release) and why I would want to start up again (after the long period where there were no upates or any feedback from developers).
Ive always liked this series, but god I hated this game at version 1.4.
Hype me up, if there is anything saving this game!

Closest I can get is 'the new townscreens'.
While a vast number of bugs have been fixed, a number of new bugs has been introduced, presumably to keep us from feeling lonely. The gameplay is, admittedly, smoother, but if you disliked the core gameplay, I fear you may see little reason to actually return. Balance fixes are there, but nothing fundamental has changed gameplay-wise.
I wanted more fun skirmish games, maybe with side quests, and a fun balance betweeen the races. Custom games where everyone didnt just town portal spam the whole game away. Hopefully gameplay that requires you to have multiple heroes to accomplish your goals. With more intelligence than cheats from the ai.
I wanted the boring parts of the hero upgrades to be more interesting and balanced. 10% bonus in rejuvenation vs 10% better fireball is still a "who cares" situation. I think the inferno town has a building that gives you 10% larger gating. Bleh who cares. I dont like how almost every town's marketplace and heroes guild is basically the same. The fewer resources decision really made it boring.
Mage guild? Thieves guild? Depth in gameplay?
Where is it?
And I really, really, expected the graphic issues to be fixed already. God the graphics look worse than what I remember.
Not going to happen. Might happen, would be a low priority. Might take awhile.Originally Posted by shop26A835193 Go to original post
The idea:
I think if you pick a magic champion, you could get a free level 1 mage guild. If you pick a might champ, you get a free level 1 thieves guild (which would let u get a free extra troops and some other stuff, depending on which race you were).
Seems easy/interesting to implement, if designers were willing.
Depth in Gameplay:
Easy, create two hero development modes, normal and advanced. So people who wanted the dumbed down gameplay could play "normal" and the people who wanted depth could go "advanced". Satisfy your player base. I mean why does it have to be one or the other? Just a hero panel and some numbers...
The ideas are certainly quite interesting, and I heartily endorse them. I doubt it'd happen any time soon though, because it'd mean new code. And from what I've gathered thus far, it would appear that the code is about as impenetrable and complicated as a granite octopus.Originally Posted by shop26A835193 Go to original post
Apart from the town screens what really changed was the balance. Destructive is awesome and even weak skills like toughness and luck have become pretty **** good. Abilities have become more reputation focused so going for blood or tears is more important than before. The dwelling prices have been largely tweaked so that elites are easier to build and recruit, same for champions. Now you can squeeze in an elite dwelling on the end of week 1 or go for a core upgrade which was not a viable choice. External dwelling growth has been downplayed, unit growth has changed, might units are more tied to might defense than magic and vice versa.. A couple of artifact sets have been introduced with the two dlcs which everyone can get without buying the dlcs.
But otherwise AI is the same and there have been no radical changes to the formula.
