This time of year always used to be called the 'silly season' because the media were short of meaningful stories - but somehow I don't think this is the case any more. Instead, we get fed stories on Mega-Wombats and space aliens (and possibly alien mega-wombats from space) to distract us from reality. Or, with due regard to Raaaid, from what we are told we are supposed to think reality is...
Then again, my favourite newspaper headline of all time was entirely factual (or near enough factual to justify itself, and get by the sub-editors and wartime censors, or possibly factual enough to be believed later, even if it was never actually used): Eighth Army push bottles up Germans...
