Hi there. Just found this place.

Love playing uboat games, began in '87 or '88 when I got Silent Service for my Amiga 2000.

Just got SH4 a week ago, and I have 95% hull damage in the middle of a career I'd hate to die in.

I assume I can have it repaired if I can get to a home based port, but as I can't survive even periscope dept with the current damages, it's hard not to get noticed by planes on my way.

Any helpful tips before I give up and restart my career?

    Thanks

    Hello King-Ole,

I don't know of any tips to give you. If you can get to your main base you would get repaired.
You could go back to your last save before you got damaged.

A hearty welcome to the Pacific to our FNGs.
You boys are at the base of the learning curve and you have no place to go but up from here.
Best of luck to you. But we all make our own luck, right?

Your chances of getting back to base in one piece is pretty slim. If you have 95% damage to your sub, it probably means that your fuel tanks have been holed. Depending on how far you are from base you probably won't make back to base with enough fuel if a Japanese patrol or aircraft doesn't spot you first. You only option is to restart the patrol otherwise your kinda dead in the water.

Thanks for your replies and advise.

Unfortunately, I've been saving in the same file, so there is no going back to a previous one...

I will give it a couple of tries more, and just restart the mission if the planes keeps killing me.

A little advice on saves. Save in a new file each time. Multiple saves in the same file will cause the file to corrupt.

Have you tried scope depth yet? Depends on mods, assume you're not using any, but if your compartments aren't flooded, you should be able to get to scope depth. I once had 99% damage and got to scope depth, then would run like heck on the surface at night. If you make it to port, you'll probably get a message about your boat being crap, hopefully given another one, but usually a lower class.

Thanks for the advice. Have not had any corruption issues yet, but have saved to the file less than 10 times.

Yes, I have tried scope depth. That's certain death unfortunately.

    Thanks though.

    EDIT:

When starting a career, are there any missions that are easier than others, and hence good to start with for a SH4 beginner like me?

If you're in campaign mode, you'll get sent to patrol zones and ever so often get a special mission. Many of the special missions in stock are simply fubar, not to mention the stock game is still full of bugs, the traffic layers very unhistorical, thus planes show up in mass anywhere. Do yourself a favor and load TMO. If you're concerned, there is a an easier version of TMO called TMO with training wheels.

Nothing much you can do regarding what special missions you will get, some are easier, some aren't and many in stock make no sense at all.
