“They were just buried there in transport crates,” Mr Cundall said. “They were waxed, wrapped in greased paper and their joints tarred. They will be in near perfect condition.”
Heres the BBC link on this story http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-17710598. Now find all the other links on this "find" . Then do a small bit of internet research on the history and timeline of the war in Burma then have another careful look at all the links again and realise this story is pie in the PR sky.
Hmm, remember a couple of years ago the zero found in a cave on guadalcanal story. it was too good to be true as well, and why spitfire mkII, wouldnt they have had much later marks prevalent in burma like 9e and 14's. if its true its a boom for museums and private collectors once they sort out the ownership.
Battle of Britain vintage Mk IIs buried in Burma in 1946 ? Seriously.
There does however seem to be some truth behind all the journalistic hyperbole. It seems what we are really talking about is 12 or so RR Griffin powered Mk XIVs which apparently exist but the condition after 65 years is not yet known.
A slightly more accurate news report ...
